Faroe Islands-based death/doom practitioners Hamferð are now streaming the newest single, a cut entitled “Hvølja,” from their upcoming Men Guðs Hond Er Sterk album, set for release on March 2 through Metal Blade Records.
Hamferð chose to record their latest effort entirely live in the studio, with no click-track to guide them. This stripped-down approach resulted in a record that pulsates with a life of its own, effortlessly shifting from passages of glacial post-metallic beauty through sorrowful folky goth cadences, via icy blackened blast-beats to shuddering vistas of extreme doom mastery.
“I had a big fascination with making stuff rougher, dirtier, and uglier,” reveals guitarist and producer Theodor Kapnas about the single. “Musically it’s all about tension; suspended chords and tense harmonies, always having that feeling of uncertainty. That song is maybe my favorite track on the record, just because it’s so uncompromising. Everything goes to 11.”
He added: “‘Hvølja’ is also the darkest and ugliest song we have written to date. It is a sonic and lyrical representation of the world being violently ripped apart by monstrous currents and consumed by a black sky above.”
Men Guðs Hond Er Sterk is available for pre-order here.
