In a recent conversation on The SDR Show, Slayer‘s guitarist Kerry King revealed an interesting tidbit about his debut solo album, From Hell I Rise: King originally recorded the scratch vocals on all the album’s demo tracks, most of them as first takes. Reflecting on his vocal style, King described it as sounding like “an angry white punk kid,” with a tone he likened to something “kind of adolescent.”
These initial vocal recordings served as placeholders until more polished vocals were added. King explained: ” I just put it on there so we had something existing. I knew I didn’t wanna sing because I can’t sing and play that much. The easy parts, yeah, but not like Zakk Wylde or James Hetfield does. They’re crazy vocalists who play crazy riffs underneath what they’re singing. I don’t know how they do it.”
When asked if these scratch vocal tracks might ever see the light of day as a bonus release, King didn’t rule it out: “I’m not against it. If you ask me, like, what if Glenn Tipton sang all the Priest‘s songs. Would you wanna hear it? I’m, like, that’s a weird scenario, ’cause it’s fucking Rob Halford. But I’d be curious. It’s intriguing.”
King recently sat down with Metal Injection for an extensive interview where he mentioned that a Slayer reunion show in Europe might happen in the near future, even when frequent Slayer shows are largely not happening.
“It’s hard not to. I’m trying to be real and definitely say, hey, we’re not gonna tour again. And we’re certainly not gonna record again, ’cause I have a means of doing that now with my band. [We’re doing] three shows for now. And I say ‘for now’ because I know Europe’s gonna come knocking, ‘Hey, man, you guys played America. Come see us.’ So it wouldn’t surprise me if something like that happened, but it’s certainly not on my books right now.”
