Iowa nurse uses art to bring joy to kids battling cancer
The fourth floor of Blank Children’s Hospital is home to some of the sickest pediatric patients. Children battling cancer spend countless days and even years there as they receive treatment. It becomes a home away from home as they fight the battle of their lives. That’s why nurse Ally Stutzman spends her breaks creating colorful creations of hope. Stutzman gets to know each patient and draws a life-size poster of their favorite character or hobby on their door. “I just feel very fortunate to do something, even as small as a drawing, that kiddos get to look forward to,” said Stutzman. If you walk down the hallway, you’ll see everything from Bluey to Mario to Barbie. Each door’s poster tells a story of a brave child behind it. While the art is fun to look at, Stutzman says the children’s reactions are the best thing to watch.
