Churches spread word about Safe Haven Law in NH

After an infant was found dead in Manchester in March, a church is trying to get the word out to parents about their options under the state’s Safe Haven Law.The infant girl was found in Pine Island Pond, and police said they are still investigating the case.”This no longer became, ‘Can we do this?’ and it quickly became, ‘How can we not do this?'” said Ron Bodendorf, pastor of Ark Church. “This was something that we needed to do.”The baby, who police named Grace, inspired Bodendorf, who put signs in church windows in May reminding parents that under the Safe Haven Law, they can give up their newborn infants at any church.>> Download the free WMUR app to get updates on the go: Apple | Google Play <<“Really to just get the word out and, if I may, make some noise,'” Bodendorf said.He said an infant can be handed off in the prayer room and then be taken to a nursing room, where there are resources and materials to help take care of the baby.St. Joseph Cathedral put up a similar sign last summer.”We want every child to be safe and to be healthy,” said the Rev. Jason Jalbert. “And if we can be a part of that in any way, we want to be.”Bodendorf said he wants to deliver the same message to parents, letting them know there are places to turn when it feels like there aren’t.”You’re not alone,” he said. “And we’re begging for them to let us walk with them.”Babies can be placed in safe havens if they are 61 days old or less. Other safe havens include fire and police stations and hospitals.
