Some in Seabrook call for 10 p.m. beach curfew

Some people in Seabrook are asking the town selectboard to create a 10 p.m. curfew for Seabrook Beach to stop partying and late-night fireworks.While some residents said a curfew is needed to keep things quiet, others say it’s not an issue and that 10 p.m. is too early.”It’s out of control,” said resident Arleigh Greene.Greene has lived at Seabrook Beach for 18 years. He said that over the past five years, things have gotten out of hand at the south end of the beach.>> Download the free WMUR app to get updates on the go: Apple | Google Play <<“I don’t want to sound like a party pooper, but it’s just, nothing happens good after midnight, ever,” he said. “This activity is going on as late as 3:30, 4 in the morning.”Greene said people are parking at local businesses that are closed and walking to the beach, where they party late into the night, lighting off fireworks and leaving their trash behind.He’s asking the selectboard to make a 10 p.m. curfew.”Even a 10 p.m. curfew is not going to work unless we can enforce it,” he said.At a recent selectboard meeting, Police Chief Brett Walker said the police department typically has a unit stationed at the beach during the busy times of year and adds beach patrols when staffing allows. “If there is no one available to work the overtime or if they are working overtime as a patrol officer, there may not be a beach patrol officer,” Walker said.One selectman noted that fireworks aren’t allowed on the beach at all.Some who were at the beach Thursday said a 10 p.m. curfew is too early.”Ten seems a little early because of the fireworks in Hampton, which go off at 9:30, and a lot of people come here to the beach to watch them, so I think 10 is a little early,” said Patricia Delude, who vacations in Seabrook.Town officials have not returned requests for comment.
