Tracking chance of rain late in the weekend

After a dry and pleasant start to the holiday weekend, more clouds move in with a chance of some rain before the weekend is over.

The Storm Watch 9 team is tracking a chance of rain on the northern edge of a developing coastal storm for Sunday evening into Monday. You might hear the “nor’easter” term used for it in the coming days, but impacts for New Hampshire look very low as the strong winds and heaviest rain look to stay to our south. The term nor’easter is applicable to any storm that includes strong winds out of the northeast and heavy precipitation, which is what will develop well to our south.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: TRACKING CHANCE OF RAIN

There is a chance for showers in far southern New Hampshire late in the afternoon and evening.

As a storm slides up the coast, there is a chance of showers and possible steadier rain for far southern areas late Sunday night into Monday.

It will become a bit breezy out of the east/northeast late Sunday into Monday, with wind gusts up to 35 mph possible near the coast and in higher elevations of the Monadnock Region.

Towns near the coast have the best chance for receiving up to 1 inch of rainfall. While much of southern New Hampshire could pick up over 1/2 inch of rain, very little meaningful rainfall is expected for central and northern New Hampshire.

Any steady rain would be beneficial, as the state is in the midst of its worst drought in years.

WHITE MOUNTAINS

It’s a busy holiday weekend, with tourists expected to flock north to catch the last of the foliage. In the White Mountains, the foliage is past its peak, though there are still some spectacular views.

For anyone planning a hike, they are urged to be prepared as the temperatures drop higher up in elevation. What could feel like fall in the valley could feel like winter at the peaks.

The mountains will stay dry through Sunday afternoon but could see a few scattered showers on Monday.

LAKES REGION

Foliage is at its peak in the Lakes Region, giving Granite Staters and visitors some awesome views at Lake Winnipesaukee and other areas.

Much of Sunday is dry, but more clouds move in. Any rain in this part of the state will be light on Monday. Both days will be cooler with temperatures near 60 Sunday and in the 50s Monday.

SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE

Foliage is close to its peak if your plans take you to the Monadnock Region. Meanwhile, leaves are changing colors each day across the Merrimack Valley and the Seacoast, though the peak is still a week or so away.

It turns mostly cloudy Sunday with a few sprinkles or a light shower, mostly late in the day or evening. There is a chance of some steady rain beginning Sunday night and lasting through much of Monday.

Stay tuned to the Storm Watch 9 forecast through the weekend.
