The Power of Godly Mentorship

There is a powerful principle in leadership that Jesus modeled perfectly: He spent the majority of His time with the twelve, not the twelve hundred. Even the greatest Leader the world has ever known prioritized deep, relational mentorship.

We were created for relationships. While Jesus is always our ultimate Mentor, God also places people in our lives to walk alongside us, to sharpen us, and to help us grow.

In the biblical account of Elijah and Elisha, we see a beautiful illustration of what it looks like to hunger for growth. Elisha didn’t just follow Elijah; he was bold enough to ask for a double portion of his spirit.

Can you be that bold? Here are three things to consider about your own growth:

Preparation: Elisha spent years serving before he led. Are you willing to “plow the field” while you wait for God’s timing? Are you willing to serve other leaders as the Lord prepares you to lead?

Surrender: Elisha burned his farming tools to ensure he would never go back. What old ambitions do you need to surrender in order to move forward?

Proximity: Elisha stuck with Elijah wherever he went. Are you seeking out mentors who are further along the path than you are?

You don’t have to have everything figured out to be mentored, and you don’t have to be perfect to mentor someone else. The mentor relationship can be as simple as “doing life” together, sharing a conversation, a Bible study, or a walk.

If you are feeling a stir in your spirit to grow, to be challenged, or even to stop disqualifying yourself, I invite you to watch “How to Find a Godly Mentor (and become one!) | Life Leadership Part 3.” In this episode, we break down eight specific principles of preparation that will help you move from where you are to where God is calling you to be. Don’t wait for “someday.” The time for your transformation is now.

I’m wildly cheering you!
