Heisman quarterly report: Chambliss remains in the lead

With Week 3 in the rearview, we’re officially already one-fourth of the way through the college football regular season.

During the early portion of the schedule, some players have begun to emerge in the Heisman field. After previously previewing the race in the preseason and following Week 1, we’re back with another look at the state of the race.

Amid all the hoopla surrounding Lane Kiffin’s return to Oxford, Associated Press No. 8 Ole Miss’s massive 32-24 home win over the No. 7 LSU Tigers came down to one simple fact. One team had Chambliss, and the other didn’t.

The sixth-year starter showed all the poise one would expect of a seasoned vet while dicing up a previously stout LSU defense in the first half, when he was 21-of-27 for 248 yards and two touchdowns, including a perfect 8-of-8 on third downs.

Chambliss cooled off in the second half but still managed some highlight-reel plays, including a wild backhanded toss for a 19-yard gain and the winning score on a 14-yard rushing touchdown.
