Giants make expected Odell Beckham Jr. move after whispers

Ahead of the New York Giants‘ Week 3 game against the Tennessee Titans this past Sunday, first-year Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy hinted that veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. could have a significant role in the team’s offense versus the Titans. 

That proved not to be the case, and it now appears that Beckham may never again play for the Giants.

On Tuesday afternoon, well-known NFL reporter Josina Anderson shared that Beckham confirmed he has been released by the Giants. As Mike Garafolo of NFL Network noted, Beckham logged 20 snaps with a single target and no receptions over the campaign’s first three weeks. 

Giants fans who sat in windy and rainy conditions at MetLife Stadium this past Sunday chanted for the club to get Beckham more involved. However, it became clear before those individuals made their voices heard that Beckham was viewed as basically an afterthought in the eyes of Nagy and first-year head coach John Harbaugh.

Per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Beckham’s lone target of the season came in the Week 3 game against Tennessee. Beckham finished Week 1 with 11 snaps and zero targets. He then had three snaps and zero targets against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 2. 

Are Giants shopping Odell Beckham Jr.?

Giants reporter Patricia Traina of Sports Illustrated suggested the club is releasing Beckham so it can sign receiver Braxton Berrios from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. Meanwhile, Florio thinks the Rams or the San Francisco 49ers could potentially take a flier on Beckham. 

Beckham earned a Super Bowl ring while playing for Rams head coach Sean McVay during a portion of the 2021 season. 

“It’s also possible the Giants are getting out the word that they’ll be releasing him in order to get someone to offer them something for his contract, which pays out the league minimum salary,” Florio added about Beckham. “Even if they get only a conditional seventh-round pick from a team like the Rams or the 49ers (both of which could use help at the position), it will be something more than nothing at all. Absent a trade, Beckham will once again become a free agent.”

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Beckham will not re-sign with the Giants to land on their practice squad. 

“It’s all love between OBJ and the Giants organization, but the hope is that he can find a better situation where he’ll have an opportunity to play,” Schultz explained via X (formerly known as Twitter). “The fact that he earned a roster spot this summer should help him get another shot.”
