CFP rankings tiers: How much danger are country’s top 10 teams in heading into November schedule?

The College Football Playoff selection committee released its initial 2026 top 25 rankings on Tuesday. And while plenty remains unresolved, a majority of the field may already be set in stone.

That’s because in the first two years of the expanded 12-team playoff, 16 of the 20 teams (80 percent) ranked in the top 10 of the initial rankings eventually qualified for the field.

Below, we separate the CFP committee’s top 10 teams in tiers based on how secure their playoff spots are entering the first Saturday of November.

I. Tickets nearly punched

No. 1 Miami Hurricanes (8-0, 6-0 in ACC)
No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs (7-1, 5-1 in SEC)
No. 3 Utah Utes (8-0, 5-0 in Big 12)
No. 4 Indiana Hoosiers (8-1, 5-1 in Big Ten)

Over the previous two seasons, seven of the eight teams in the top four of the first rankings made the playoff, with 2024 Miami, which ranked No. 4 in that season’s inaugural CFP poll, the only team failing to make the field.

This year’s Hurricanes have less to worry about, with ESPN’s Football Power Index giving them a 98.1 percent chance of making the playoff, the highest odds in FBS. Even a loss in Week 10 at No. 11 Notre Dame (7-1), a 5.5-point favorite, won’t be enough alone to knock Miami from the field. As the ACC’s clear best team and with the conference’s champion guaranteed a playoff spot, the Canes have protection.

The Bulldogs, Utes and Hoosiers all have better than 75 percent odds of making the playoff. Georgia has the country’s most impressive victory based on the committee’s rankings, defeating No. 5 Alabama, and can pick up another quality win at No. 10 Ole Miss on Saturday.

Utah’s home game against No. 9 BYU, which ESPN Analytics gives the Utes a 65.7 percent chance to win, is a chance for it to flesh out its playoff case, while the defending champion Hoosiers have only three regular-season games remaining and a 34.2 percent chance of winning out, the sixth-highest odds in FBS.

II. One loss could change everything

No. 5 Alabama Crimson Tide (6-2, 4-2 in SEC)
No. 7 Texas Longhorns (6-2, 3-2 in SEC)
No. 8 UCLA Bruins (8-0, 5-0 in Big Ten)
No. 10 Ole Miss Rebels (6-2, 4-2 in SEC)

The committee’s sordid love affair with Alabama reached another level on Tuesday, but it might be less smitten with the Tide if they lose to No. 12 LSU. Still, if anyone can survive three losses, the message is loud and clear that team is Alabama.

Texas has proven to have as high a ceiling as any team in the country with three wins over teams in the CFP’s top 12. It, too, may be able to withstand a close road loss at No. 18 Missouri (6-2, 3-2 in SEC) or LSU over the next two weeks.

UCLA’s case is a bit more complicated. Its best win is by two at a disappointing No. 23 Oregon (5-3, 3-2 in Big Ten), which was playing its first full game without starter Dante Moore. But two years ago, Indiana managed to make the playoff despite a soft schedule and loss to its toughest opponent, Ohio State, by 23. Based on Tuesday’s rankings, however, strength of schedule appears to be a bigger factor, meaning the Bruins might not get the same benefit by following a similar track.

After getting Georgia at home in a rematch of last season’s Sugar Bowl win, Ole Miss has a favorable schedule with remaining FBS games against Oklahoma (4-4, 2-3 in SEC) and Mississippi State (4-4, 2-4 in SEC). By late Saturday, the Rebels may have one foot in the playoff field.

III. The place-holders

No. 6 Kentucky Wildcats (7-1, 5-1 in SEC)
No. 9 BYU Cougars (7-1, 4-1 in Big 12)

Kentucky has lived on the edge this season, defeating South Carolina and LSU by razor-thin margins on two-point conversions in overtime. With three consecutive ranked SEC opponents on deck before the season finale against Louisville (5-3, 4-2 in ACC), the Wildcats could soon find themselves on the wrong end of one (or more) of those one-score games.

If history repeats itself, BYU is only here for a good time, not a long time. The Cougars placed in the top 10 in both of the past two initial CFP rankings only to fade in November. This year, Utah may deliver a knockout punch. Per ESPN’s FPI, BYU has only 44 percent odds of reaching the playoff, the lowest among teams in the top 10.
