Drummer Carmine Appice<\/strong> \u00a0\u2013 best known for his work with Vanilla Fudge<\/strong>, Cactus<\/strong>, Rod Stewart<\/strong>, King Kobra,<\/strong> and Blue Murder<\/strong> \u2013 recently shared his insights on The Adventures Of Pipeman<\/em> on W4CY Radio regarding the birth of the heavy metal genre. When host The Pipeman<\/strong> mentioned that in the early 1980s, bands like Quiet Riot<\/a><\/strong> were not viewed as true heavy metal amidst the rise of thrash metal bands such as Metallica<\/a><\/strong> and Slayer<\/a><\/strong>, Carmine<\/strong> agreed, elaborating on his perspective of the genre’s evolution.<\/p>\n “Even Slayer<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>. They weren’t that buzzsaw guitar back in the day. All those bands. Biohazard<\/strong>. I mean, all those bands \u2014 they were hard rock,\u201d he said (as transcribed by Blabbermouth<\/a><\/em>). “And then as the, per se, metal movement moved on and everybody started having that buzzsaw, Metallica<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> kind of buzzsaw guitars and fast bass drums like Lars Ulrich<\/strong>. And I think that’s where it all started. All that stuff that’s going on today started with Metallica<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> \u2014 in my eyes. I mean, I could be wrong. But for me, and all the stuff before that, including Black Sabbath<\/a><\/strong>, was hard rock.”<\/p>\n Appice<\/strong> went on to compare early Black Sabbath<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> to Led Zeppelin<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>. He reflected on his experiences playing gigs with Black Sabbath<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> when they first emerged alongside his band Cactus<\/strong>: “I mean, Black Sabbath<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> was just, to me, like another Led Zeppelin<\/a><\/strong> <\/strong>coming out of Birmingham. I mean, we played gigs with Black Sabbath<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> back in the day when they first came out with Cactus<\/strong>\u2026 We were rock blues and so was Black Sabbath<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>.”<\/p>\n Carmine<\/strong> described the song “Paranoid” as similar to Led Zeppelin<\/a><\/strong>‘s “Communication Breakdown” in its early days: “I mean, ‘Paranoid’, to me, back in the day was like a ‘Communication Breakdown’ Led Zeppelin<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> kind of thing. And then as it went along and went along, I mean, their sound got thicker, but it still didn’t have that buzzsaw sound. That’s my own opinion. Everybody says Sabbath<\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> is heavy \u2014 they\u2019re heavy hard rock.\u201d<\/p>\n So, next time you are playing Iron Maiden<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s The Number Of The Beast<\/em>, Judas Priest<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Screaming For Vengeance<\/em>, Mot\u00f6rhead<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Iron Fist<\/em>, or Venom<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Black Metal<\/em> (all of them released the year before Metallica<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Kill\u2019Em All<\/em> hit the shelves), be mindful that according to Mr. Appice<\/strong>, you might be listening to hard rock instead of heavy metal.<\/p>\n \n
