Both sets earned their iconic status, but there&#8217;s way more to choose from in the <em>Unplugged<\/em> annuls.<\/p>\n<p>If it wasn&#8217;t for Unplugged, about a dozen hair metal bands would&#8217;ve never been seen as actually talented. Turns out <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/great-white\">Great White<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> and <strong>Slaughter<\/strong> had way more to offer than their hits. Check them out along with some other unheralded heroes of <em>Unplugged<\/em> in the list below.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/joe-satriani\">Joe Satriani<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s episode of <em>MTV Unplugged<\/em> was the first one aired in the 1990s. This was back when two acts shared a TV slot, instead of an entire episode being dedicated to a single band like <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/nirvana\">Nirvana<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> or <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/alice-in-chains\">Alice In Chains<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>. Sharing an <em>Unplugged<\/em> episode with <strong>Stevie Ray Vaughn<\/strong>, <strong>Satch<\/strong> went full-on blues with guest musicians <strong>Jonathan Mover<\/strong> and <strong>Jules Shear<\/strong>. It&#8217;s a beautiful quarter-hour of soulful musicianship.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Joe Satriani MTV Unplugged Jan 30th 1990\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6hTueqP4c6c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>People call <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/great-white\">Great White<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s cover of &#8220;Babe I&#8217;m Gonna Leave You&#8221; the greatest <strong>Led Zeppelin<\/strong> cover ever performed. This may surprise you if you&#8217;ve only heard <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/great-white\">Great White<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> do &#8220;Once Bitten Twice Shy&#8221; or &#8220;Rock Me,&#8221; but it&#8217;s the truth. <strong>Jack Russell<\/strong>&#8216;s voice is off-the-charts incredible here. There&#8217;s a reason why <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/great-white\">Great White<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> was the A-side in their <em>Unplugged<\/em> episode with <strong>Damn Yankees<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"GREAT WHITE - Babe I&#039;m Gonna Leave You HQ VIDEO\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uAerqUwADe8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>This is another perfect example of how to do a proper <em>Unplugged<\/em> episode. The unexpected powerhouse duo of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/ratt\">Ratt<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/scorpions\">Scorpions<\/a><\/strong> \/ <strong>UFO<\/strong> legend <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/michael-schenker\">Michael Schenker <\/a><\/strong>was truly epic, with covers of <strong>Fleetwood Mac<\/strong>&#8216;s &#8220;Oh, Well&#8221; and <strong>Creedence Clearwater Revival<\/strong>&#8216;s &#8220;Born on the Bayou.&#8221; This definitely wasn&#8217;t in the glam metal playbook, but this performance shows the incredible elasticity of all involved.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"MICHAEL SCHENKER &amp; RATT [ OH, WELL &amp; BORN ON A BAYOU ] LIVE COVER UNPLUGGED\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/deHM9w4vDcE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/vixen\">Vixen<\/a><\/strong> had the tough job of sharing their <em>Unplugged<\/em> episode with <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/ratt\">Ratt<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> and <strong>Schenker<\/strong>, but the powerful female group held their own and then some with acoustic renditions of &#8220;Edge of a Broken Heart&#8221; and &#8220;Love Is a Killer.&#8221; <strong>Janet Gardner<\/strong> was on top of her game here, getting to show off the raw power of her voice with just acoustic guitars, piano and bongos behind her.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Vixen - Love Is A Killer [MTV Unplugged]\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3NIi9f3JaD8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>We haven&#8217;t even left 1990 yet, because the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/tesla\">Tesla<\/a><\/strong> episode of <em>Unplugged<\/em> was another example of killer stripped-down music. <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/tesla\">Tesla<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> was at their peak, having just released the acclaimed <em>Great Radio Controversy<\/em> and their <em>Five Man Acoustical Jam<\/em> live album. No wonder the boys were so good on <em>Unplugged<\/em>\u2026 they&#8217;d already recorded an entire acoustic metal classic!<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Tesla - Paradise | HD (MTV Unplugged - December 02, 1990) | Subt\u00edtulos: Ingl\u00e9s &amp; Espa\u00f1ol\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rpC_Sz88l5o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Wait, you&#8217;re telling me all these hair metal bands actually had talent?! <em>Unplugged<\/em> really pulled the chops out of those acts, including <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/slaughter\">Slaughter<\/a><\/strong> in this 1991 episode. This may have been <strong>Mark Slaughter<\/strong>&#8216;s finest hour \u2014 the power and tone of his voice, along with the control he had over his instrument, is undeniable. Play this version of &#8220;Fly to the Angels&#8221; for your local glam metal hater.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"SLAUGHTER \/ FLY TO THE ANGELS ACOUSTIC LIVE\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3qNvwWZ6hz8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>No surprise here\u2026 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/queensryche\">Queensr\u00ffche<\/a><\/strong> had Unplugged on lock before they even hit the stage. In this 1992 episode, <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/queensryche\">Queensr\u00ffche<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> were awash in glistening brilliance. Say what you want about <strong>Geoff Tate<\/strong> \u2014 he was phenomenal in this era. The entire band was incredibly tight, the production on this episode was damn near perfect\u2026 what can you really say? It&#8217;s peak <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/queensryche\">Queensr\u00ffche<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> and potentially a Top 5 <em>Unplugged<\/em> of all time.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Queensryche - MTV Unplugged Della Brown\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ys__bHhhl6Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/stone-temple-pilots\">Stone Temple Pilots<\/a><\/strong> recorded their <em>Unplugged<\/em> episode in 1993, the very day before <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/nirvana\">Nirvana<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> hit Sony Music Studios and recorded the definitive <em>Unplugged<\/em> set. If it wasn&#8217;t for <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/nirvana\">Nirvana<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>, <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/stone-temple-pilots\">Stone Temple Pilots<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> would&#8217;ve carried the <em>Unplugged<\/em> flag forward until <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/alice-in-chains\">Alice In Chains<\/a><\/strong> <\/strong>did their iconic set in 1996. <strong>Scott Weiland<\/strong> was a god damn force of vocal brilliance here. Dude really had all the talent in the world.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Stone Temple Pilots  Big Empty Unplugged\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W2-aXRhpZxY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Unplugged sort of ignored heavy music after 1996\u2026 probably because no band on earth could touch <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/alice-in-chains\">Alice In Chains<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>&#8216; godlike performance. Fast forward to 2005 and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/queens-of-the-stone-age\">Queens Of The Stone Age<\/a><\/strong> recorded their own <em>Unplugged<\/em> in Berlin. The entire 42-minute episode is pretty incredible, showing how <strong>Josh Homme<\/strong> and the band could still rock without weed-soaked electric tones blasting at 130db. As hard as <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/queens-of-the-stone-age\">Queens Of The Stone Age<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> went live in the early 2000s, they really knew how to pull it back for <em>Unplugged<\/em>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Queens Of The Stone Age \u2013  Unplugged, Berlin. 2005\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FWiLDQJRDN8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>It took <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/scorpions\">Scorpions<\/a><\/strong> until 2013 to record an <em>Unplugged<\/em>? Shame on forgetting this band, MTV programmers, because <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/scorpions\">Scorpions<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> is the most obvious <em>Unplugged<\/em> slam dunk you could ever book. As kings of the heavy metal power ballad, <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/scorpions\">Scorpions<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> were unapologetically brilliant throughout this episode, which was recorded at an outdoor amphitheater in Athens. With a string quartet backing them up, the <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/scorpions\">Scorpions<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> were all aura in Greece.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Scorpions - Where the River Flows (MTV Unplugged)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7Whw9xDoZTY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"zox-post-body left zoxrel zox100\">\n<h5>Want More Metal?
