(Photo by Joe Raedle\/Getty Images)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/GettyImages-2155594861_7a0da5-e1723740422613.jpg?quality=100&amp;w=384&amp;h=216&amp;crop=1 384w, https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/GettyImages-2155594861_7a0da5-e1723740422613.jpg?quality=100&amp;w=768&amp;h=432&amp;crop=1 768w, https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/GettyImages-2155594861_7a0da5-e1723740422613.jpg?quality=100&amp;w=1536&amp;h=864&amp;crop=1 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 670px\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><figcaption id=\"lead-image-credit\">Image Credit: Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><!-- .entry-media --><\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-2\">Astronauts <strong>Suni Williams<\/strong> and <strong>Butch Wilmore<\/strong> have been stranded on the International Space Station (ISS) since early June due to malfunctions on their spacecraft, Boeing\u2019s Starliner.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-3\">With the mission now lasting more than two months\u2014far exceeding the intended eight days\u2014NASA has finally provided a clearer update on when and how Williams, 58, and Wilmore, 60, will return to Earth.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-4\">During an Aug. 14 teleconference, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/EyKqaVLpsW4?si=XqJXuUmlTxIfv7UU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\">NASA<\/a> confirmed that both astronauts are doing well aboard the ISS. <strong>Joe Acaba<\/strong>, the chief of the Astronaut Office at NASA\u2019s Johnson Space Center in Houston, noted that unexpected delays are something astronauts are prepared for.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-5\">\u201cIt\u2019s part of our job,\u201d he explained. \u201cWe realize that launch dates may slip, mission durations may change in real-time, so as professionals, they\u2019re doing great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-6\">Previously, on Wednesday, NASA stated they were still deciding whether to keep the two astronauts\u2014both retired Navy captains with experience on long space missions\u2014at the ISS until early next year and send their troubled Starliner spacecraft back empty.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-7\"><strong>Ken Bowersox<\/strong>, the associate administrator for NASA\u2019s Space Operations Mission Directorate, shared that his team will likely complete their analysis on the best way to bring the astronauts home within a week, after which a formal review will be conducted in the last two weeks of August.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-8\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got time available before we bring Starliner home, and we want to use that time wisely,\u201d said Bowersox.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-9\">With this update, Williams and Wilmore will have to wait up to two more weeks to learn whether they will board the Starliner to return to Earth or if they\u2019ll use one of SpaceX\u2019s Dragon capsules.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-10\">Switching to SpaceX would require bumping two of the four astronauts assigned to the next ferry flight, currently targeted for late September.
