St. Paul\u2019s admonition for wives to submit to their husbands as
\nthe Church submits to Christ (Ephesians 5) is one of the most
\nuncomfortable teachings for modern Catholics. But it\u2019s not just
\nobedience in marriage that moderns find objectionable\u2013and it\u2019s not
\njust liberals who can\u2019t stomach it. Across the political and
\nreligious spectrum, even among self-described traditionalists, we
\nfind all kinds of excuses to avoid obedience. Deeply embedded in
\nthe post-Enlightenment consciousness is the equation of authority
\nwith tyranny and obedience with slavery.<\/p>\n
Come to think of it, Scripture tells us that the issue of
\nauthority and obedience is fundamental to mankind\u2019s rupture with
\nGod throughout all history, beginning with the rebellion of Adam
\nand Eve. Satan tricked Eve into thinking God\u2019s command was a trick
\nto keep her down rather than a gift of love. Adam went along,
\nchoosing to please his wife rather than God, in a perversion of his
\nGod-given inclination toward union through gift. Ever since, both
\nmen and women have had a suspicious and guarded stance toward God\u2019s
\nauthority rather than a submissive and receptive one, while
\nironically dominating and manipulating others in the very way they
\nfeared God was doing to them.<\/p>\n

\nopportunity for domination and abuse. Yet not only wives, and not
\nonly married couples, but all Catholics can learn from how
\nobedience is lived in marriage, and see that obedient receptivity
\nis at the core of what it means to be a human person.<\/p>\n
