\ncomposers of the 20th century, best known for his Requiem<\/em>
\nand his motet “Ubi caritas”. His lush and tranquil choral and organ
\nworks combine a deep familiarity with Gregorian chant with the
\nstyle of impressionism, imbued with a sense of prayer as he was a
\ndevout Catholic.<\/p>\n
\nunder Durufl\u00e9’s widow, Marie-Madeleine Durufl\u00e9, joins the podcast
\nto discuss Maurice Durufl\u00e9 in his historical context as someone
\nwho, from childhood, was schooled in the Church’s ancient chant
\ntradition, and as an adult applied Pope St. Pius X’s instructions
\nfor sacred music which were so influential on that generation.
\nSchooled at the Paris conservatory, Durufl\u00e9 received rigorous
\ntraining in improvisation, which was the core skill for French
\norganists at that time. His approach to improvising on chant and
\nhymn melodies can still be heard in Catholic churches today.<\/p>\n
