Less than we thought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>There are plenty of fish in the sea, so the old saying goes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">But that\u2019s not as true as it used to be: Climate change, pollution and overfishing have slashed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/2019\/09\/25\/srocc-press-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">global fish populations<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">Now a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.adl6282\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">new study<\/a> suggests the problem may be worse than expected. It finds that global fish populations have been overestimated by an average of 11.5 percent \u2014 highlighting \u201cthat governments need to take more precautions to protect fish populations,\u201d Manuela Andreoni wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/22\/climate\/fish-stocks-overcounting.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">To reach these results, researchers sifted through nearly four decades of data from 230 of the world&#8217;s most important fisheries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">\u201cWe\u2019ve worked across all of these stocks and see this signal that tells us we\u2019re basically overestimating, on average, how much is out there,\u201d Amanda Bates, a marine ecology professor at the University of Victoria and one of the authors of the study, told The New York Times. \u201cAnd we\u2019re making management decisions based on that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">Scientists\u2019 reactions to the study have been mixed. Some see it as a red flag that points to ongoing challenges in measuring the health of fisheries \u2014 a critical source of food and jobs for millions worldwide. Others argue that the study overstates the problem, and many corrective measures are already in place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">Counting fish has always been tricky \u2014 \u201clike counting trees, except that they move and you can\u2019t see them,&#8221; Andreoni wrote.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">But counting fish accurately is essential for managing healthy fisheries \u2014 without reliable numbers, marine protected area managers are not able to make informed decisions on conservation efforts, such as fishing restrictions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/blog\/why-are-some-marine-protected-areas-falling-short\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">recent study<\/a> from Conservation International and the Smithsonian Institute showed why accurately measuring fish populations is so important. It focused on the age of fishes and found that in many marine protected areas, adult fish populations \u2014 a key indicator of a population\u2019s health \u2014 were not improving as much as researchers hoped, due to coastal development pressure, ocean temperature spikes and inadequate enforcement of fishing restrictions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">The findings are a \u201cwake-up call\u201d for marine protected areas, said Steve Canty, the study\u2019s author. In the majority of places studied, the numbers of adult fish within populations were either stagnant or decreasing. That matters because adult fish produce exponentially more \u2014 and better \u2014 eggs than smaller, younger females.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">\u201cBy breaking down the age groups, we\u2019re able to clearly see there are much higher numbers of juvenile fish than adults, showing adult fish are not benefiting from the protections in place,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is hindering our efforts to rebuild fish populations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">On a global scale, understanding what makes marine protected areas effective \u2014 and having accurate fish counts on which to base management decisions \u2014 is urgent.
