{"id":230664,"date":"2024-09-05T02:07:56","date_gmt":"2024-09-05T02:07:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newhampshiredigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/09\/05\/mikael-akerfeldts-10-best-guttural-performances\/"},"modified":"2024-09-05T02:07:56","modified_gmt":"2024-09-05T02:07:56","slug":"mikael-akerfeldts-10-best-guttural-performances","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newhampshiredigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/09\/05\/mikael-akerfeldts-10-best-guttural-performances\/","title":{"rendered":"MIKAEL \u00c5KERFELDT&#8217;s 10 Best Guttural Performances"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>It finally happened\u2026 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/opeth\">Opeth<\/a><\/strong> has gone back to gutturals. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/mikael-akerfeldt\">Mikael \u00c5kerfeldt<\/a><\/strong> caught tons of hell when he gave up the vocal style beginning with 2011&#8217;s <em>Heritage<\/em>, and he probably never stopped hearing about it until 2024, when &#8220;\u00a71&#8221; dropped and sent Opeth fans into celebration. &#8220;\u00a71&#8221; is just the first track from <strong>Opeth<\/strong>&#8216;s upcoming <em>The Last Will and Testament<\/em>, which will be released October 11. <\/p>\n<p>For this list, we tried to limit \u00c5kerfeldt&#8217;s performances to one song per album, and we&#8217;re going deep into both <strong>Opeth<\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/opeth\">Bloodbath<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s discography. If you need your fix of <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong> gutturals, here&#8217;s your goddamn buffet. <\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong> ascended to a new level of screaming on <em>Blackwater Park<\/em>. Throughout <strong>Opeth<\/strong>&#8216;s &#8217;90s discrography, there was a raspiness in <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt&#8217;<\/strong>s throat that made him sound like a dude doing some of the best gutturals you&#8217;ve ever heard. On <em>Blackwater Park<\/em>, <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong> turned into the literal voice of Lucifer. His voice felt like it emanated from another realm, with &#8220;Bleak&#8221; best representing how otherworldly <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong>&#8216;s voice became. His vocals on the album&#8217;s title track are just as incredible, but with &#8220;Bleak&#8221; being the more vocal-heavy track, this is our <em>Blackwater Park<\/em> pick.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Opeth - Bleak (Audio)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5Zdg4Sbefg4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;<em>The eyyyyyyyyyeeees! Of the Deeeevvvvvil!<\/em>&#8221; This has got to be the most epic guttural moment in <strong>Mikael \u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong>&#8216;s career. The quiet-to-brutal slow build on &#8220;The Grand Conjuration&#8221; is absolutely perfect. <em>Ghost Reveries<\/em> is filled with incredible harsh vocals (&#8220;The Baying of the Hounds&#8221; \/ &#8220;Ghost of Perdition&#8221;) but the songwriting on &#8220;The Grand Conjuration&#8221; brings <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong>&#8216;s performance to the next level.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Opeth - The Grand Conjuration (Audio)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2kKNT3PdDkE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>*slaps cover of <em>Watershed<\/em>* &#8220;This bad boy can hold so much fucking evil in it.&#8221; This was the peak of guttural <strong>Opeth<\/strong>, wasn&#8217;t it? &#8220;The Lotus Eater&#8221; and &#8220;Hessian Peel&#8221; are incredible, but <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong>&#8216;s gigantic growls over those mid-tempo licks on &#8220;Heir Apparent&#8221; is unbeatable. This was the most demonic stuff <strong>Opeth<\/strong> fans had ever heard, and also, arguably not even the best gutturals <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong> released in 2008.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Opeth - Heir Apparent (Audio)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/g1wW6yPDqwY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>Mikael \u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong> in 2008 was like <strong>Michael Jordan<\/strong> in 1998 \u2014 on a different wavelength than everyone else in the league. On <strong>Bloodbath<\/strong>&#8216;s perfect 2008 EP, <em>Unblessing the Purity<\/em>, <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong> laid down 15 minutes of nothing but godlike gutturals on top of pure Swedish death metal. It was either going to be this song or &#8220;Weak Aside,&#8221; but <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong>&#8216;s intro scream of &#8220;<em>Nazareeeeeeeene!<\/em>&#8221; made the choice for us.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Blasting The Virginborn\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZWOj84hJgHc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Sorry we couldn&#8217;t include &#8220;Serenity Painted Death&#8221; and &#8220;The Moor.&#8221; It was a real <em>Sophie&#8217;s Choice<\/em> situation, so we naturally had to give up the uglier baby. <em>Still Life<\/em> is a tad unheralded compared to masterworks like <em>Blackwater Park<\/em> and <em>Ghost Reveries<\/em>, but it&#8217;s truly the moment when <strong>Opeth<\/strong> began to make break into generational territory. The prog and death metal pieces of <strong>Opeth<\/strong> came together seamlessly on <em>Still Life<\/em>, and <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong>&#8216;s mishmash of high and low screams turned &#8220;The Moor&#8221; into a classic.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"The Moor (Remastered)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5bq8t-DEdJU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>This is the heaviest Renaissance song <strong>Opeth<\/strong> ever made. It was definitely a different era of <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong>, with the <strong>Opeth<\/strong> frontman shrieking with black metal deep in his vocal cords. <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong>&#8216;s high screams are so great on &#8220;The Apostle in Triumph,&#8221; especially when he belts out lyrics like, &#8220;In this forest, where wolves cry their agony unto the moon!&#8221; Nordic as fuck.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"The Apostle In Triumph\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z53K6e8yFoU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>A love letter to classic death metal, <strong>Bloodbath<\/strong> formed to make this brilliant EP at the turn of the millennium. It&#8217;s disgustingly produced thanks to the legendary <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/dan-swano\">Dan Swan\u00f6<\/a><\/strong>, and he really made <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong> sound like he was recording his vocals from the depths of Hell. You&#8217;ve never heard <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong> sound this cold on tape.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Omnious Bloodvomit\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_FYIC8tNGdk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>This song feels like you&#8217;re face-to-face with <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong>&#8216;s gutturals. &#8220;Master&#8217;s Apprentices&#8221; is so riff-based in its first half that <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong>&#8216;s voice becomes punctuated in that classic <strong>Morbid Angel<\/strong> style. Its vocal-centric craftsmanship makes &#8220;Master&#8217;s Apprentices&#8221; unique for the <strong>Opeth<\/strong> catalogue, letting the <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong> faithful really geek out on his voice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Opeth - Master&#039;s Apprentices (Audio)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4hR7S3lLP28?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>This may be a controversial pick, because it&#8217;s not <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong>&#8216;s most versatile performance. However, it&#8217;s an absolute beast when it comes to his low growls (along with guest growls from <strong>Christian \u00c4lvestam<\/strong>). He annunciates perfectly throughout <strong>Bloodbath<\/strong>&#8216;s &#8220;Iesous,&#8221; hitting each punchy verse with the exact right tone and timing. Who else makes perfect gutturals sound this easy?<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Iesous\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-XFMa-lRDqI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>For <em>My Arms, Your Hearse<\/em>, it&#8217;s gotta be &#8220;Demon of the Fall.&#8221; You can really hear <em>Still Life<\/em> and <em>Blackwater Park<\/em> creeping up on this song. <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong> was forming his deep vocal vortex, tapping deep into a sonic brutality that most are incapable of touching. The instrumental parts are so damn good on &#8220;Demon of the Fall&#8221; that they almost overshadow <strong>\u00c5kerfeldt<\/strong>&#8216;s vocals\u2026 it&#8217;s just a win-win for the listener in every way.
