It&#8217;s been 20 years since <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/trivium\">Trivium<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/the-black-dahlia-murder\">The Black Dahlia Murder<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/testament\">Testament<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/obituary\">Obituary<\/a><\/strong> headlined the last edition in Irvington, NJ and it got us thinking of classic fests we&#8217;d love to see just one more time.<\/p>\n<p>Metal festivals have never been so widespread, but many just don&#8217;t have the mystique of the classics, do they? Here&#8217;s 10 festivals that went the way of the dodo, but should absolutely come back with a vengeance. <\/p>\n<p>Created to spit in the face of the snobby Lollapalooza, Ozzfest became an oasis for metalheads across the United States. Just check out the 2005 lineup \u2014 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/black-sabbath\">Black Sabbath<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/iron-maiden\">Iron Maiden<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/slipknot\">Slipknot<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/rob-zombie\">Rob Zombie<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/mastodon\">Mastodon<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/killswitch-engage\">Killswitch Engage<\/a><\/strong> and more. Danny Wimmer Presents has since taken the reigns for the U.S. rock and metal fest, but everyone nostalgic for Ozzfest would save a little extra cash to see it one more time.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Black Sabbath - &quot;War Pigs&quot; Live at Ozzfest 2005\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1MMKxS-8Zv8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Sonisphere had some fucking epic bills during its eight-year run. In 2010, the fest held the inaugural Big Four shows, where <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/metallica\">Metallica<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/megadeth\">Megadeth<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/slayer\">Slayer<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/anthrax\">Anthrax<\/a><\/strong> all shared the stage for the first time. Sonisphere traveled to countries like Bulgaria, Turkey, Bulgaria and Greece, with different lineups in each location. 2010 seemed to be the festival\u2019s grandest year, with <strong>Iron Maiden<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/rammstein\">Rammstein<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/alice-in-chains\">Alice in Chains<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/motorhead\">Mot\u00f6rhead<\/a><\/strong> also gracing the Sonisphere stage.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Metallica: Am I Evil? (Live w\/ The Big 4) [The Big 4: Live in Sofia, Bulgaria]\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/__j5Z_WcVgE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Monsters of Rock wasn\u2019t just that compilation CD you ordered from the television. It was the metal festival that defined the \u201880s, hosting all the greats from classic heavy metal to glam and hair metal. And of course, when the \u201890s came around, Monsters of Rock hosted some of the greatest <strong>Metallica<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/pantera\">Pantera<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/ac-dc\">AC\/DC<\/a><\/strong> performances ever caught on tape.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"monsters of rock - moscow 91&#039; - (pantera, black crowes, metallica, acdc)Full concert.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3Mtilj2gKz0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Remember how great Mayhem Festival was? Not too big, not too small, and with killer headliners like the 1, 2, 3 punch of <strong>Slipknot<\/strong>, <strong>Slayer<\/strong> and <strong>Mot\u00f6rhead<\/strong> in 2012. It ultimately fizzled out after the 2015 <strong>Slayer<\/strong> \/ <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/king-diamond\">King Diamond<\/a><\/strong> \/ <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/hellyeah\">Hellyeah<\/a><\/strong> lineup saw low attendance, but those early 2010s bills were pretty epic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Slipknot Live Mayhem Festival 2012(Eyeless, Wait And Bleed, Duality,Surfacing) 720p HD\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3-cXM0zbrSk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>It was one day held 50 years ago, but the 1974 California Jam Festival remains iconic. It set the record for loudest amplification ever installed, the highest paid attendance (250,000 people) and highest gross ever for a music festival. You probably know it best from an iconic daytime <strong>Black Sabbath<\/strong> performance where the metal legends played on the rainbow stage and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/deep-purple\">Deep Purple<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s headlining gig that ended in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/ritchie-blackmore\">Ritchie Blackmore<\/a><\/strong> going apeshit on his guitar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"California Jam, 1974; Ritchie Blackmore\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vcAjMB3hsq8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>It came and went like Halley\u2019s Comet, and like the cosmic event, it was once in a lifetime. Many of the greats of psychedelic rock and proto-metal were there for three days in the California fairground, including <strong>Jefferson Airplane<\/strong>, <strong>The Who<\/strong>, <strong>Big Brother and the Holding Company<\/strong> and <strong>Quicksilver Messenger Service<\/strong>. The most iconic performance, however, came from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/jimi-hendrix\">Jimi Fucking Hendrix<\/a><\/strong>. Monterey Pop isn\u2019t just the best <strong>Hendrix<\/strong> performance caught on film it\u2019s also the night he famously set his axe on fire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Jimi Hendrix Sets Guitar On Fire at Monterey Pop Festival 1967 - YouTube.flv\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3U5dvC5qr6Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Summer Slaughter was the apex of brutal death metal and tech death in the 2000s. The first iterations were headlined by a soon-to-retire <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/necrophagist\">Necrophagist<\/a><\/strong>, who became synonymous with the fest. Summer Slaughter then leaned into deathcore and prog, giving fans a multitude of extreme styles that divided some, but no doubht influenced the more genre-free bills we see today. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/the-dillinger-escape-plan\">The Dillinger Escape Plan<\/a><\/strong> playing with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/thy-art-is-murder\">Thy Art Is Murder<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/cattle-decapitation\">Cattle Decapitation<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/animals-as-leaders\">Animals as Leaders<\/a><\/strong>? I\u2019m in.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Necrophagist - The Stillborn One (Live Summer Slaughter Tour 2007)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/omZQkkJ-QPA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>At n\u00fc-metal\u2019s cultural peak, Family Values was the most hyped touring festival in the States. That first lineup was insane \u2014 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/korn\">Korn<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/limp-bizkit\">Limp Bizkit<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Rammstein<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/orgy\">Orgy<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/incubus\">Incubus<\/a><\/strong> along with <strong>Ice Cube<\/strong>. The inaugural Family Values Festival in 2013 didn\u2019t quite capture that same energy, but with the current resurgence of n\u00fc-metal, why not bring Family Values back with <strong>Rammstein<\/strong>, <strong>Korn<\/strong>,<strong> Limp Bizkit<\/strong>,<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/mudvayne\">Mudvayne<\/a> <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/static-x\">Static-X<\/a><\/strong>? Then throw on the n\u00fc generation with acts like <strong>H09909<\/strong>, <strong>Tallah<\/strong>, <strong>City Morgue<\/strong> and <strong>Tetrarch<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"KoRn - Falling Away From Me (Family Values Tour 1999) 480p\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OxWR8cMaYuk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>Metallica<\/strong>\u2019s own festival of handpicked acts was a little too ambitious and eclectic for its audience. It lost a shit ton of money, but looking back, it was kind of awesome. In 2012, <strong>Metallica<\/strong> played <em>Ride and Lightning<\/em> and <em>The Black Album<\/em> in full, gave <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/ghost\">Ghost<\/a><\/strong> an early career boost, and gave slots to awesome underground acts like <strong>Landmine Marathon<\/strong> and <strong>Liturgy<\/strong>. Sure, <strong>Metallica<\/strong> fans didn\u2019t really want to see <strong>Modest Mouse<\/strong> or <strong>Arctic Monkeys<\/strong>, but if Orion looked more like its 2013 edition (<strong>Metallica<\/strong>, <strong>RHCP<\/strong>, <strong>Deftones<\/strong>) it could do pretty well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Ghost at the Orion Music and More Festival\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3KtoGIMUdcg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Yes, Woodstock 99 was an unbelievable disaster with riots and sexual assault. Woodstock 50 failed miserably and never even took place, but the historic memory of Woodstock still deserves a Woodstock 94 type of revival. Give the rights to someone who can manage it, create a lineup that actually makes sense, put the profit motive aside for just one weekend and hold an event in the spirit of 1969.
