Whether a musician has a medical emergency or freaks out over bad catering, bands have been forced to smuggle last-minute replacements onstage for an emergency gig. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Rob Halford<\/strong> singing for <strong>Black Sabbath<\/strong>? <strong>Dave Lombardo<\/strong> drumming for <strong>Metallica<\/strong>? It&#8217;s happened\u2026 and only a small number of fans get to boast that they saw it live. Check out these last-minute replacements who absolutely crushed it when another band needed them.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/judas-priest\">Judas Priest<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s legendary vocalist has filled in for both <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/ozzy-osbourne\">Ozzy Osbourne<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/ronnie-james-dio\">Ronnie James Dio<\/a><\/strong>. In 1992, when <strong>Dio<\/strong> apparently didn&#8217;t want to open for <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/ozzy-osbourne\">Ozzy<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>&#8216;s solo band, Halford accepted a two-night invite to sing for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/black-sabbath\">Black Sabbath<\/a><\/strong>. Over a decade later, when <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/ozzy-osbourne\">Ozzy<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> was back in <strong>Sabbath<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/rob-halford\">Rob Halford<\/a><\/strong> filled in for the Prince of Darkness at an Ozzfest gig after <strong>Osbourne<\/strong> was diagnosed with bronchitis. Needless to say, <strong>Halford<\/strong> was perfection.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"BLACK SABBATH ROB HALFORD PARANOID 2004\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Bu0yFYovONE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>At the 2004 Download Festival, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/metallica\">Metallica<\/a><\/strong> drummer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/lars-ulrich\">Lars Ulrich<\/a><\/strong> reportedly suffered an anxiety attack before the gig. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/slayer\">Slayer<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/slipknot\">Slipknot<\/a><\/strong> were onsite for the fest, which meant both <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/dave-lombardo\">Dave Lombardo<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/joey-jordison\">Joey Jordison<\/a><\/strong> were summoned to <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/metallica\">Metallica<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>&#8216;s practice space for a last-minute rehearsal. Both <strong>Lombardo<\/strong> and <strong>Jordison<\/strong> were phenomenal, but there&#8217;s just something about <strong>Lombardo<\/strong> playing \u201cBattery\u201d that hits like a ton of bricks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Metallica W\/ Dave Lombardo - (Battery \/ The Four Horsemen)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T8tbNptFPMU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>This was the resurrection of <strong>Axl Rose<\/strong>. For many years after the classic <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/guns-n-roses\">Guns N&#8217; Roses<\/a><\/strong> lineup disbanded, <strong>Rose<\/strong> sang like a shell of his former self, but when he was called to take over vocals for an ailing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/brian-johnson\">Brian Johnson<\/a><\/strong>, the Sunset Strip legend reappeared. The <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/guns-n-roses\">GN&#8217;R<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> siren sounded incredible with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/ac-dc\">AC\/DC<\/a><\/strong> and the quality of his performances carried over to <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/guns-n-roses\">Guns N&#8217; Roses<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>&#8216; historic reunion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"AC\/DC W\/Axl Rose - Thunderstruck (Madison Square Garden,Nyc) 9.14.16\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Lb54wxS5ACk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/gary-holt\">Gary Holt<\/a><\/strong> was the perfect replacement for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/jeff-hanneman\">Jeff Hanneman<\/a><\/strong>, and for one leg of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/slayer\">Slayer<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s 2018 European tour, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/phil-demmel\">Phil Demmel<\/a><\/strong> was the perfect replacement for <strong>Holt<\/strong>. <strong>Holt<\/strong> unfortunately had to rush home mid-tour to be with his dying father, so the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/machine-head\">Machine Head<\/a><\/strong> \/ <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/vio-lence\">Vio-lence<\/a><\/strong> veteran learned a legendary setlist of thrash anthems. He nailed it, and <strong>Demmel<\/strong> later credited <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/slayer\">Slayer<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> with giving him his confidence back.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss -  Oslo Spectrum 6.12.2018 Live\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6xetpdc1r54?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/deep-purple\">Deep Purple<\/a><\/strong> were left in a bind when <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/ritchie-blackmore\">Ritchie Blackmore<\/a><\/strong> walked out after a show on Nov. 17, 1993. The band reached out to guitar great <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/joe-satriani\">Joe Satriani<\/a><\/strong>, who initially declined the offer before ultimately saying yes, joining the iconic band for the remainder of their 1993\/1994 tour. <strong>Satch<\/strong> was asked to join <strong>Deep Purple<\/strong> full-time, but instead chose to serve the fan base he&#8217;d already cultivated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Deep Purple with Joe Satriani - Knocking At Your Back Door - Live 1994\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FXag1wAemoU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Back in 2012, then-<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/the-agonist\">Agonist<\/a><\/strong> vocalist <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/alissa-white-gluz\">Alissa White-Gluz<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/amaranthe\">Amaranthe<\/a><\/strong> singer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/elize-ryd\">Elize Ryd<\/a><\/strong> launched a Herculean (or Xenan) effort to cover for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/nightwish\">Nightwish<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/anette-olzon\">Anette Olzon<\/a><\/strong>. When <strong>Olzon<\/strong> was rushed to the hospital right before a show in Denver, <strong>White-Gluz <\/strong>and <strong>Ryd<\/strong> had just minutes to prepare to go onstage with the symphonic metal giants. Luckily, <strong>Ryd<\/strong> knew plenty of <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/nightwish\">Nightwish<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> songs thanks to her auditioning for the band in the 2000s. <strong>White-Gluz<\/strong> knew almost no <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/nightwish\">Nightwish<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> at all, but with the help of some lyric sheets, she killed it anyway.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Nightwish with Elize Ryd - Storytime Live (HQ) (HD)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OQsON8D6--U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>It was truly epic when <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/metallica\">Metallica<\/a><\/strong> bassist <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/robert-trujillo\">Robert Trujillo<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s son made his debut with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/korn\">Korn<\/a><\/strong> at just 12 years old. After bassist <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/fieldy\">Fieldy<\/a><\/strong> sat out part of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/korn\">Korn&#8217;<\/a><\/strong>s 2017 tour, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/tye-trujillo\">Tye Trujillo<\/a><\/strong> became an overnight metal superstar by performing at a level well beyond his years. Like his father, <strong>Tye<\/strong> proved to be a natural performer with nerves of steel, killing it onstage with the n\u00fc-metal greats.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"KoRn + Tye Trujillo - Falling away from me (Malvinas Argentinas, Buenos Aires, 25.04.2017) HD\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SDVT3RR1WKM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Talk about a monster fill-in. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/tool\">Tool<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/danny-carey\">Danny Carey<\/a><\/strong> can probably play any drum part on Earth, but in 2014 he proved that he could suck with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/primus\">Primus<\/a><\/strong>. <strong>Carey<\/strong> jumped in on drums after <strong>Tim Alexander<\/strong> suffered a heart attack, playing three shows with the kings of weird in Chicago and Denver. <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/primus\">Primus<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> even jammed a mashup of \u201cMy Name Is Mud\u201d with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/tool\">Tool<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s \u201cAenima.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Primus with Danny Carey - Aenima into My Name is Mud at Riot Fest 2014\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8NaU0RD-Vlg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>After an ailing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/mike-ix-williams\">Mike \u2018IX&#8217; Williams<\/a><\/strong> was unable to perform on a 2016 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/eyehategod\">Eyehategod<\/a><\/strong> tour, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/lamb-of-god\">Lamb of God<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/randy-blythe\">Randy Blythe<\/a><\/strong> stepped in to scream for the New Orleans legends. According to <strong>Williams<\/strong>, <strong>Blythe<\/strong> \u201cused to beg\u201d <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/eyehategod\">Eyehategod<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> to sing one of their songs when the band would visit Richmond, Va. Of course, <strong>Blythe<\/strong> did a stellar job on the mic, just like when he teamed up with the <strong>Bad Brains<\/strong> to help <strong>H.R.<\/strong> with the band&#8217;s faster cuts.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"EYEHATEGOD (w. Randy Blythe) - New Orleans is the New Vietnam\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7_0uJeMush4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/decrepit-birth\">Decrepit Birth<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Bill Robinson<\/strong> got to sub in for one of his mentors in 2012.
