N\u00fc-metal came to prominence with the advent of bands like Korn<\/a><\/strong> and Deftones<\/a><\/strong> (at least their first record) in the mid-90s. The genre would take off big time in the next few years as massively popular bands like System Of A Down<\/a><\/strong>, Limp Bizkit<\/a><\/strong>, Slipknot<\/a><\/strong> joined the fray. But where did the roots of n\u00fc-metal come from? If you ask former Fear Factory<\/a><\/strong> vocalist Burton C. Bell<\/strong>, Anthrax<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> and their 1987 track “I’m The Man” had at least something to do with it.<\/p>\n In an interview with Nu Pod<\/em>, Bell<\/strong> asserted that Anthrax<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> arguable pioneered n\u00fc-metal with “I’m The Man” in all its rap-rock glory. “I’m The Man” was a take on the Beastie Boys<\/strong>‘ style (another major influence on the n\u00fc-metal world) ,and is widely considered to be one of the first rap-rock songs.<\/p>\n “I’m The Man” was eventually revisited in 1991 for the Attack Of The Killer B’s<\/em> compilation, which furthered Anthrax<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>‘s love of rap-rock with their cover of Public Enemy<\/strong>‘s “Bring the Noise” featuring Public Enemy<\/strong> themselves. So <\/p>\n “I’m glad you said that, because Biohazard<\/a><\/strong>, other than Anthrax<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>\u2026 Biohazard<\/a><\/strong> was influenced by Anthrax<\/a><\/strong> when Anthrax<\/a><\/strong> did ‘I’m The Man’, you could say that Anthrax<\/a><\/strong> pioneered n\u00fc-metal by fusing together thrash and hip hop,” said Bell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n “And that inspired Biohazard<\/a><\/strong> to work with other artists like\u2026 They were like connected with Onyx<\/strong> in a way, maybe it was that soundtrack they were a part of [the Judgment Night<\/em> soundtrack.] But I remember when we did that tour with Biohazard<\/a><\/strong> in 1993. It was Fear Factory<\/a><\/strong>, Sick Of It All<\/a><\/strong> and Biohazard<\/a><\/strong>, and Biohazard<\/a><\/strong> was already at that point experimenting with hip hop beats.”<\/p>\n Bell<\/strong>‘s point about Anthrax<\/a><\/strong> is definitely a good one, but also shines some light on the fact that maybe Biohazard<\/a><\/strong> deserves a little more of a place in the n\u00fc-conversation too.<\/p>\n \n
