You saw a legend before they became a legend. Check out these obscure bands who had soon-to-be-famous vocalists below.<\/p>\n<p>Before <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/layne-staley\">Layne Staley<\/a><\/strong> helped kill hair metal as one of grunge\u2019s greatest vocalists, he was in a hair metal band himself. The band was <strong>Sleze<\/strong> \u2014 made from a group of students <strong>Staley<\/strong> met at Shorewood High in Washington. In the mid-80s, <strong>Sleze<\/strong> made a cameo in a truly horrendous low-budget movie called <em>Father Rock<\/em>, performing inside a church in full glam attire. Thanks to the wonders of YouTube, you can check out that piece of history below.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"\u201cFATHER ROCK\u201d - SLEZE - ALICE N CHAINS - MOVIE EXCERPT 1986\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r3KQ5MBMcdI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The plan was set \u2014 make old school death metal, sign to Roadrunner Records and become the next <strong>Sepultura<\/strong>. <strong>Repugnant<\/strong> were close to making that vision a reality, but frontman \u201cMary Goore\u201d ultimately ended up on a different track\u2026 singing as a demonic Pope in another throwback metal act \u2014 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/ghost\">Ghost<\/a><\/strong>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/tobias-forge\">Tobias Forge<\/a><\/strong> still has a soft spot for death metal, and <strong>Repugnant<\/strong>\u2019s sole full-length album, <em>Epitome of Darkness<\/em>, still holds up.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Repugnant - Draped in Cerecloth | Live @ Nosturi, Helsinki. September 11th, 2010\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kldGdQbSzoE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>This is seriously one of those diamonds in the rough. <strong>Enemy Soil<\/strong> made some killer crust grind in the \u201890s, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/agoraphobic-nosebleed\">Agoraphobic Nosebleed<\/a><\/strong> vocalist <strong>Richard Johnson<\/strong> and future <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/pig-destroyer\">Pig Destroyer<\/a><\/strong> vocalist <strong>J.R. Hayes<\/strong>. The 1997 album <em>Ruins of Eden<\/em> features 11 studio tracks, where you can hear <strong>Johnson<\/strong> doing vocals, and five live tracks with <strong>Hayes<\/strong> screaming like a banshee.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Enemy Soil - Ruins Of Eden MCD [1997]\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Qy7TKvQ4w_A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>If you listen to the <strong>C.A.D.<\/strong> song \u201cBurn About Out\u201d at half-speed, you may recognize one of the definitive alt-metal tracks of the 1990s. Before he formed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/tool\">Tool<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/maynard-james-keenan\">Maynard James Keenan<\/a><\/strong> was the flamboyant vocalist for <strong>Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty<\/strong>. Based in Michigan, <strong>C.A.D.<\/strong> was sort of a mishmash of alt styles. It was only until the hypnotic focus of <strong>Tool<\/strong> came into play that \u201cBurn About Out\u201d became \u201cSober.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"C.A.D.-Early Sober (Maynard James Keenan 1987)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zdREH1BqGDk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Maybe \u201cobscure\u201d isn\u2019t the right word to describe <strong>Adventures<\/strong>, because this offshoot of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/code-orange\">Code Orange<\/a><\/strong> experienced some success in the indie rock space. It\u2019s just surreal to watch members of the vicious hardcore band perform such soft, heartfelt music years before they broke out with <em>Forever<\/em>. \u201cHeavenly\u201d is just a phenomenal song and it leads us to wonder if <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/reba-meyers\">Reba Meyers<\/a><\/strong> was on-route to become hardcore\u2019s <strong>PJ Harvey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Adventures - &quot;Heavenly&quot; (Official Music Video)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mgqAc2Ux1Tw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Plenty of fans know <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/bruce-dickinson\">Bruce Dickinson<\/a><\/strong> sang for the band <strong>Samson<\/strong> before he joined <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/iron-maiden\">Iron Maiden<\/a><\/strong>, but how many of you have actually watched the <em>Biceps of Steel<\/em> VHS? It\u2019s one of the silliest damn things ever put to tape. <strong>Bruce<\/strong>\u2019s voice, though? WOW! His pipes were there from the get-go. Just listen to the pre chorus to \u201cVice Versa.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Samson -  &quot;Biceps Of Steel&quot; (1980)  with Bruce Dickinson\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YfY6Le6gufg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Just one of many bands <strong>Ralph Saenz<\/strong> fronted over the years, you can really see hair metal struggling to stay alive in this 1993 footage below. <strong>Saenz<\/strong> truly earned his metal cred, and the dedication to his craft finally paid off when <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/steel-panther\">Steel Panther <\/a><\/strong>released their hilarious <em>Feel the Steel<\/em> in 2009. Take a bow, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/michael-starr\">Michael Starr<\/a><\/strong>\u2026 you took the long road and walked it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"7% Solution - Bad Girls\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/f_Qpj1zi94I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Down in the swamps of Georgia, a bizarre act called <strong>Four Hour Fogger<\/strong> set the stage for one of the 21st century\u2019s greatest metal bands. Guitarist\/vocalist <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/brent-hinds\">Brent Hinds<\/a><\/strong> and bassist <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/troy-sanders\">Troy Sanders<\/a><\/strong> would go on to form <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/mastodon\">Mastodon<\/a><\/strong>, but <strong>Four Hour Fogger<\/strong> was much more raw and violent than the prog metal giants. Let\u2019s just say the instrumental work in <strong>Four Hour Fogger<\/strong> was way better than the vocals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Four Hour Fogger (pre-Mastodon) &quot;Asteroids&quot; live in NOLA &#039;96\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zWdZSFAFDZA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Before <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/seth-putnam\">Seth Putnam<\/a><\/strong> became one of metal\u2019s most controversial vocalists with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/anal-cunt\">Anal Cunt<\/a><\/strong>, he was in a band called <strong>Satan\u2019s Warriors<\/strong>. The band was just as silly as it sounds\u2026 but entirely on purpose. <strong>Putnam<\/strong> was just as ridiculous in <strong>Satan\u2019s Warriors<\/strong>, squealing like a deranged monkey while rocking a bare midriff in the footage below. Apparently, this song is called \u201cJesus Has a 1-Inch Penis With a Mole on the Side.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"&quot;Satan&#039;s Warriors&quot;\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8wsAAO2V_CI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>This is genuinely awesome. Before <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/tag\/ronnie-james-dio\">Ronnie James Dio<\/a><\/strong> committed his phenomenal voice to heavy metal, he sang in a classic vocal group. If <strong>Dio<\/strong> had been born a few years earlier, he could\u2019ve been <strong>Paul Anka<\/strong> or <strong>Frankie Valli<\/strong>. Obviously things worked out for <strong>Dio<\/strong> in the end, but it feels like he existed in an entirely different universe in songs like \u201cAn Angel Is Missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Ronnie Dio and the Red caps - An Angel is Missing (1961) .wmv\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ew8MUT00aK0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"zox-post-body left zoxrel zox100\">\n<h5>Want More Metal?
