Today\u2019s post, an update of Riley Lindheimer\u2019s 2017 piece, looks a solar eclipses past and present. (NARA photo by Jeff Reed) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Although partial solar eclipses occur more frequently, total solar eclipses require the perfect alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Observers in the \u201cpath of totality,\u201d a narrow path of visibility, will experience a period of temporary darkness while the moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, blocking the Sun and its corona. <\/p>\n<p>In 2017, the path spanned the\u00a0contiguous United States\u00a0from the\u00a0Pacific\u00a0to the\u00a0Atlantic\u00a0coasts. This fleeting window adds to the excitement and novelty of the total solar eclipse, motivating people to travel miles to be in the path of totality. NASA and other organizations have worked to promote safe viewing practices for solar eclipses. To safely view an eclipse and to learn what to expect, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/feature\/solar-eclipse-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NASA\u2019s website<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Tips to safely view the eclipse include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>View the sun through eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer during the partial eclipse phases before and after totality.<\/li>\n<li>Do NOT use eclipse glasses or handheld viewers with cameras, binoculars, or telescopes.<\/li>\n<li>Do NOT look at the sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer\u2014the concentrated solar rays will burn through the filter and cause serious eye injury.<\/li>\n<li>You can view the eclipse directly without proper eye protection only when the moon completely obscures the sun\u2019s bright face\u2014during the brief and spectacular period known as totality. <\/li>\n<li>As soon as you see even a little bit of the bright sun reappear after totality, immediately put your eclipse glasses back on or use a handheld solar viewer to look at the sun.<\/li>\n<li>Seek expert advice from an astronomer before using a solar filter with a camera, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device.
