{"id":27228,"date":"2024-04-11T16:37:06","date_gmt":"2024-04-11T16:37:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newhampshiredigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/11\/climate-biodiversity-fight-gets-5b-shot-in-the-arm\/"},"modified":"2024-04-11T16:37:06","modified_gmt":"2024-04-11T16:37:06","slug":"climate-biodiversity-fight-gets-5b-shot-in-the-arm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newhampshiredigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/11\/climate-biodiversity-fight-gets-5b-shot-in-the-arm\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate, biodiversity fight gets $5B shot in the arm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>The fight to stop climate change and biodiversity loss just got a major boost.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an announcement today at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climateweeknyc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Climate Week<\/a>, nine philanthropic organizations \u2014 including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moore.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Betty and Gordon Moore Foundation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niatero.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Nia Tero <\/a>and the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesolutionsproject.org\/bezos-earth-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bezos Earth Fund<\/a> \u2014 pledged US$ 5 billion over the next decade to support the creation and expansion of protected areas, sustainable management of the world\u2019s oceans and Indigenous-led conservation. Called the <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.wcs.org\/News-Releases\/articleType\/ArticleView\/articleId\/16685\/Private-Funders-of-the-New-Protecting-Our-Planet-Challenge-Announce-5-Billion-Commitment-to-Protect-and-Conserve-30-of-Planet-by-2030.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Protecting Our Planet Challenge<\/a>, this effort marks the largest ever private funding commitment to biodiversity conservation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cPreventing runaway climate change and avoiding the extinction crisis will require the greatest mobilization of resources in human history,\u201d said M. Sanjayan, CEO of Conservation International, which was not involved in the announcement. \u201cGovernments, corporations, Indigenous peoples and local communities, and NGOs all have a key role to play, and today\u2019s US$ 5 billion commitment by the Protecting Our Planet Challenge is a much-needed start \u2014 and a sign that momentum is on our side.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>This funding will support the global goal to protect 30 percent of the planet by 2030 \u2014 a target informally known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2283791-un-plan-would-protect-30-of-oceans-and-land-to-stem-extinctions\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201c30 by 30\u201d initiative<\/a>, which has been adopted by more than 50 countries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>According to a recent UN report, there is no time to waste: Global warming will almost certainly surpass 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) within the next 20 years unless countries act more quickly to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect nature on a much larger scale, the report found. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThis is the decisive decade for tackling climate change, and protecting the lands and waters that serve as our life support system is an imperative in that fight,\u201d said Andrew Steer, president and CEO of the Bezos Earth Fund, in <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.wcs.org\/News-Releases\/articleType\/ArticleView\/articleId\/16685\/Private-Funders-of-the-New-Protecting-Our-Planet-Challenge-Announce-5-Billion-Commitment-to-Protect-and-Conserve-30-of-Planet-by-2030.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">a statement<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Protecting nature could also help prevent future pandemics, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/blog\/3-ways-to-prevent-the-next-pandemic-with-nature-according-to-science\">recent research<\/a> co-authored by Conservation International scientists. The study found that reducing deforestation, restricting the global wildlife trade and monitoring the emergence of new viruses before they spread could help decrease the risk of future pandemics by 27 percent of more. \u00a0<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThis last year has made clear that natural systems are all connected \u2014 ecosystem health, climate health, human health \u2014 and by protecting and restoring 30 percent of the world\u2019s land by 2030, we can safeguard our collective future,\u201d Sanjayan said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Currently, Conservation International experts are working to create a roadmap to help determine \u201cwho\u201d \u2014 from farmers to foresters to consumers \u2014 must be empowered to do \u201cwhat\u201d and \u201cwhere\u201d to conserve the world\u2019s ecosystems. One key aspect of the roadmap is protecting the world\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/blog\/study-protect-these-places-or-face-climate-doom\">irrecoverable carbon<\/a>\u201d \u2014 that is, vast stores of carbon that, if lost, could not be restored by 2050.
