{"id":27247,"date":"2024-04-11T17:46:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-11T17:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newhampshiredigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/11\/coach-analyst-offer-split-opinions-of-qb-michael-penix-jr\/"},"modified":"2024-04-11T17:46:00","modified_gmt":"2024-04-11T17:46:00","slug":"coach-analyst-offer-split-opinions-of-qb-michael-penix-jr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newhampshiredigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/11\/coach-analyst-offer-split-opinions-of-qb-michael-penix-jr\/","title":{"rendered":"Coach, analyst offer split opinions of QB Michael Penix Jr."},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>It&#8217;s becoming more and more clear with each day why the draft stock of Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. seems to be a moving target ahead of the 2024 player-selection process that opens on April 25.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For a piece published on Thursday, <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/5375788\/2024\/04\/11\/nfl-draft-2024-top-quarterbacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ben Standig<\/a> of The Athletic revealed that at least one unnamed assistant coach believes Penix is &#8220;better now&#8230;for NFL football&#8221; than both North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye and J.J. McCarthy of the Michigan Wolverines. LSU Tigers signal-caller Jayden Daniels has been repeatedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yardbarker.com\/nfl\/articles\/coaches_scouts_and_executives_say_who_commanders_should_draft_at_no_2\/s1_13132_40223128\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">linked<\/a> with a Washington Commanders side that holds the draft&#8217;s second pick and it&#8217;s believed the New England Patriots will spend the third choice to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yardbarker.com\/nfl\/articles\/analyst_scout_address_if_patriots_will_trade_down_in_nfl_draft\/s1_13132_40223314\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grab<\/a> either Maye or McCarthy if Washington takes Daniels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Chicago Bears are expected to make USC Trojans star Caleb Williams the draft&#8217;s first overall pick.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;[Penix] can read (defenses), throw accurately, is quick and has a strong enough arm,&#8221; the coach said of the Washington signal-caller. &#8220;He\u2019s more of a sure thing to play in the NFL, but I\u2019m not sure where he goes from here because he doesn\u2019t have the same upside.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>One offensive coach from an AFC team recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yardbarker.com\/nfl\/articles\/afc_offensive_coach_shares_bold_draft_take_about_michael_penix_jr\/s1_13132_40211558\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a> Penix his &#8220;No. 2 guy&#8221; among quarterback prospects in this class and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/2024\/04\/08\/takeaways-michael-penix-jj-mccarthy-stefon-diggs-nfl-draft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NFL insider Albert Breer<\/a> of Sports Illustrated shared in that same piece that &#8220;it\u2019s pretty apparent to me that coaches are higher on Penix than scouts.&#8221; That second part is interesting considering a scout told Standig that Bo Nix of the Oregon Ducks is &#8220;much better than Penix&#8221; heading into the draft.<\/p>\n<p>At best, analysts have Nix rated fifth among quarterbacks in this year&#8217;s draft class.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Penix is serviceable and a different player when he\u2019s playing on schedule,&#8221; the scout added. &#8220;But he\u2019s not a good foot athlete, and I worry about him when he gets traffic in his face.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Also on Thursday, analyst <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/5405673\/2024\/04\/11\/nfl-draft-2024-jj-mccarthy-jayden-daniels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nick Baumgardner<\/a> of The Athletic called Penix &#8220;a third-round prospect \u2013 closer to the back end of the top 100 than the middle.&#8221; Some evaluators <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yardbarker.com\/nfl\/articles\/why_baker_mayfield_may_not_stop_buccaneers_from_drafting_a_qb\/s1_13132_40215374\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">think<\/a> Penix could be either a top-20 selection or that a team could move up into the final choices of the first round to ensure a fifth-year option is attached to his rookie contract.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s hard to bet against him, as he\u2019s obviously overcome a ton already,&#8221; Baumgarder noted about Penix, &#8220;but he\u2019s about to be 24 years old, has been hurt multiple times and is not a consistently accurate passer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Specifically on the health front, Penix <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yardbarker.com\/nfl\/articles\/michael_penix_jr_addresses_worrisome_injury_history\/s1_13132_40042326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tore<\/a> his right anterior cruciate ligament twice and suffered injuries to both shoulders in college. Assuming Baumgardner is correct, the New York Giants may be able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yardbarker.com\/nfl\/articles\/reports_update_if_giants_may_trade_up_to_draft_quarterback\/s1_13132_40223524\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wait<\/a> until the second round before they take a flier on Penix via overall pick No. 47.
