The company allegedly decided that the large language model (LLM) principles behind OpenAI\u2019s chatbot could give the iPhone\u2019s virtual assistant a much-needed shot in the arm. So Apple will reportedly roll out a new version of Siri powered by generative AI at its <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/apples-wwdc-keynote-is-scheduled-for-june-10-180558453.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:WWDC keynote on June 10;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">WWDC keynote on June 10<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Apple Senior Vice Presidents Craig Federighi and John Giannandrea reportedly tested ChatGPT for weeks before the company realized that Siri looked outdated. (I would argue that the epiphany came about a decade late.) What followed was what <em>The NYT<\/em> describes as Apple\u2019s \u201cmost significant reorganization in more than a decade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company sees generative AI as a once-in-a-decade tentpole area worth shifting heaps of resources to address. You may recall the company <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/the-apple-car-project-is-reportedly-dead-203012885.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:canceled its $10 billion \u201cApple Car\u201d project;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">canceled its $10 billion \u201cApple Car\u201d project<\/a> earlier this year. Apple reportedly reassigned many of those engineers to work on generative AI.<\/p>\n<p>Apple executives allegedly fear AI models could eventually replace established software like iOS, turning the iPhone into \u201ca dumb brick\u201d by comparison. The clunky, awkward and overall unconvincing first wave of dedicated AI gadgets we\u2019ve reviewed, like the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/the-humane-ai-pin-is-the-solution-to-none-of-technologys-problems-120002469.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Human AI Pin;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Human AI Pin<\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/rabbit-r1-review-a-199-ai-toy-that-fails-at-almost-everything-161043050.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Rabbit R1;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Rabbit R1<\/a>, aren\u2019t good enough to pose a threat. But that could change as software evolves, other smartphone makers incorporate more AI into their operating systems and other hardware makers have a chance to innovate.<\/p>\n<p>So, at least for now, it appears Apple isn\u2019t launching direct competitors to generative AI stalwarts like ChatGPT (words), <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/midjourney-ends-free-trials-of-its-ai-image-generator-due-to-extraordinary-abuse-153853905.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Midjourney;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Midjourney<\/a> (images) or <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/elevenlabs-reportedly-banned-the-account-that-deepfaked-bidens-voice-with-its-ai-tools-083355975.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:ElevenLabs;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">ElevenLabs<\/a> (voices). Instead, it will start with a new Siri and updated iPhone models with expanded memory to better handle local processing. At its <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/everything-announced-at-apples-let-loose-ipad-event-161005007.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:May iPad event;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">May iPad event<\/a>, the company ran a video plugging the new iPad Pro that showed various creative tools crushed by a hydraulic press. The clip accidentally served as the perfect metaphor for the (legitimate) fears of artists, musicians and other creators, whose work AI models have trained on \u2014 and who stand to be replaced by those same tools as they become more normalized for content creation.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/apple-apologizes-for-its-tone-deaf-ad-that-crushed-human-creativity-to-make-an-ipad-211116524.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Apple apologized for the ad;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Apple apologized for the ad<\/a> and said it canceled plans to run it on TV.<\/p>\n<p><a data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/samsungs-annual-profits-continued-to-decline-in-2023-090500640.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Samsung;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Samsung<\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/google-pixel-8a-hands-on-flagship-ai-and-a-120hz-oled-screen-for-499-160046236.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Google;cpos:12;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Google<\/a> have already loaded their flagship phones with <a data-i13n=\"cpos:13;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/samsungs-new-galaxy-ai-features-are-coming-to-the-s23-and-last-years-foldables-210046981.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:various generative AI features;cpos:13;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">various generative AI features<\/a> that go far beyond improving their virtual assistants. These include tools for editing photos, generating text and enhancing transcription (among other things). These features typically rely on cloud-based servers for processing, whereas Apple\u2019s approach will allegedly prioritize privacy and handle requests locally. So Apple will apparently start with a more streamlined approach that sticks to improving what\u2019s already there, as well as keeping most or all processing on-device.<\/p>\n<p><em>The New York Times<\/em>\u2019 sources add that Apple\u2019s culture of internal secrecy and privacy-focused marketing have stunted its AI progress.
