They are tiny and stingless. And Indigenous communities in the Amazon have used their medicinal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/blog\/meet-3-indigenous-women-fighting-for-the-future-of-the-amazon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">honey<\/a> for centuries to ward off microbial and fungal infections. Plus, they are critical for plant pollination and regrowing forests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\">For countless generations, people have relied on Melipona bees \u2013 now the tables are turning. The bees are under threat from deforestation, pesticides and climate change, and Indigenous women are working to ensure that their ancestral knowledge helps them survive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\">With support from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/about\/fellowships\/women-fellowship-opportunity-for-indigenous-women-leaders-in-environmental-solutions-in-the-amazon\" rel=\"noopener\">Conservation International\u2019s Amazonia Indigenous Women\u2019s Fellowship Program<\/a> \u2014 which provides funding, training and networking opportunities for women to lead conservation in their territories \u2014 beekeepers are sharing their traditional knowledge and improving their technical skills. In a workshop earlier this year, six women from Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador shared their experiences in protecting the bees and learned about hive infrastructure and how the queen bees and males function.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\">\u201cThe society of bees teaches us to live in connection, in respect, in synergy,\u201d said fellow Katty Guatatoca, a beekeeper from the Kichwa Indigenous community in Ecuador. \u201cLiving from what nature gives us and at the same time, contributing to nature.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" style=\"width: 560px; height: 315px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto\" class=\"-align-center\">\n<p><iframe title=\"Knowledge Exchange: Reproducing Bees and Knowledge\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0Cp8ItStdBA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\"><strong\/><\/span><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\"><strong>Protecting an iconic African landscape<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\">Mutarian Ntanin was born and raised in southeast Kenya\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/projects\/restoration-in-kenyas-chyulu-hills\" rel=\"noopener\">Chyulu Hills<\/a> \u2014 an expanse of savannas, woodlands and cloud forests where he tends livestock like generations of Maasai before him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\">But over the course of his lifetime, Ntanin has witnessed dramatic changes. Dense forests have been cleared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/blog\/in-kenyas-storied-hills-traditional-ways-confront-a-modern-problem-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make way for agriculture<\/a>, degrading the numerous springs and rivers that supply water for 7 million people, plus livestock and wildlife \u2014 including, critically-endangered black rhinos and Kenya\u2019s largest elephant population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\">To protect the land, local communities joined Conservation International, the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust and other partners in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/blog\/what-on-earth-is-redd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations-backed initiative<\/a> that provides financial incentives to keep forests intact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\">\u201cAs an elder, I always tell my children, \u2018If you save the environment, you are saving your life,\u2019\u201d Ntanin said. \u201cI trust that nature can heal itself. But this will not be possible if we do it in isolation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/blog\/when-covid-flattened-tourism-carbon-credits-kept-these-african-hills-green\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forest-carbon project<\/a> is helping to conserve and restore 404,000 hectares (1 million acres) of land, while generating much-needed investments in local communities \u2014 from setting up an emergency food program for schoolchildren to improving village health services to supporting new opportunities for incomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\">\u201cChyulu Hills is our bank for future generations,\u201d he added. \u201cPeople see there is a future in the environment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" style=\"width: 560px; height: 315px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto\" class=\"-align-center\">\n<p><iframe title=\"Chyulu Hills - An Ami Vitale, SproutFilms, Dane Henry Digital Collaboration\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ELEodEtoJMg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\"><strong\/><\/span><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\"><strong>Making big waves for marine conservation<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\">In Fiji, Indigenous peoples make up just 1 percent of the population \u2014 but they recently helped launch an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/projects\/the-lau-seascape\" rel=\"noopener\">ambitious plan<\/a> to conserve over a quarter of the country\u2019s expansive ocean area, which is increasingly threatened by climate change and overfishing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\">A partnership between traditional leaders, the national government, Conservation International and others seeks to balance communities\u2019 livelihoods with marine protections in the Fijian province of Lau, a remote archipelago of more than 60 islands. The plan is to protect the fragile ecosystem, while supporting sustainable local economies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; font-family: inherit\">This island chain is a waypoint for migrating marine species like whales.
