It\u2019s a critical responsibility. From Africa\u2019s savannas to the coral reefs of the Pacific, wildlife is under severe threat. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2019\/05\/nature-decline-unprecedented-report\/#:~:text=The%20Report%20finds%20that%20around,20%25%2C%20mostly%20since%201900.\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">One million species<\/a> of animals and plants are at risk of extinction by 2030 \u2014 and humanity is largely to blame.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">Conservation International\u2019s experts have consulted governments in the leadup to the summit and will be there to help make big gains for nature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">Here are three critical questions ahead of the summit:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ciorg.imgix.net\/images\/default-source\/default-album\/ci_57823076_full?&amp;auto=compress&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=crop?&amp;auto=compress&amp;auto=format&amp;w=800\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: right\"><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"><strong>Is the world on track to meet its goals?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">Two years ago, nearly every country on Earth signed on to the most ambitious plan ever to reverse nature loss \u2014 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/blog\/cop15-reaches-ambitious-plan-for-nature-now-countries-must-accelerate-action\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">sweeping framework<\/a> made up of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/gbf\/targets\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">23 targets<\/a> and an unprecedented goal: conserving 30 percent of all lands and seas by 2030.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">Now, policymakers are gathering once again to assess progress on this bold promise to protect nearly a third of the planet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">\u201cThe framework passed at the last COP requires countries to clearly indicate how their national plans meet specific targets,\u201d said Carly Siege, a policy expert at Conservation International. \u201cSo far, about a third of countries have submitted their plans, and each of them include a \u201830 by 30\u2019 target.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">But that leaves over 100 countries behind the November 2024 deadline to finalize their biodiversity plans. Conservation International has emphasized the urgency of this issue, working closely with nations to help them meet their goals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">\u201cIn every region where we operate \u2014 Africa, the Americas and Asia-Pacific \u2014 our scientists, policy experts and local partners are collaborating to ensure countries\u2019 updated biodiversity plans are both ambitious and scientifically sound,\u201d said Jill Hepp, who leads Conservation International\u2019s biodiversity policy work. \u201cThe summit in Colombia will focus on fostering collaboration, bringing together nations with established plans and those still working on them, to ensure that every country sets concrete, actionable targets.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">Turning these goals into action will require countries to think and act locally \u2014 seeking input from people who rely on nature for their livelihoods. In particular, they must ensure the rights and participation of Indigenous Peoples, who have proven to be among the most <a href=\"https:\/\/esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/fee.2148\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">effective stewards of nature<\/a>. How countries have employed this kind of participatory approach will be part of the progress assessment in Cali.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: right\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ciorg.imgix.net\/images\/default-source\/default-album\/ci_93462044_full?&amp;auto=compress&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=crop?&amp;auto=compress&amp;auto=format&amp;w=800\" alt=\"\"\/>Blue and yellow macaw, Bolivia \u00a9 Jonathan Irish<span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h6>\n<h3><strong style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit; color: inherit\">How can we protect biodiversity and solve climate change at the same time?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">There is clear scientific evidence that biodiversity loss and climate change are interconnected, and nature is important to addressing both crises. Earth\u2019s biodiversity \u2014 from tiny organisms in the soil to animals that disperse seeds \u2014 gives nature its ability to effectively store carbon and slow climate change. When it\u2019s lost or degraded, nature can\u2019t store as much carbon or provide other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/blog\/new-map-pinpoints-where-people-depend-on-nature-the-most\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">benefits that people depend on<\/a>, like fresh water, food or housing materials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">But as of 2023, fewer than half the world\u2019s countries had aligned their climate plans with their nature commitments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">According to Siege, these conflicting priorities can be addressed by having countries agree to tackle the biodiversity and climate crises in tandem \u2014 developing national climate and biodiversity plans that reinforce each other and are not isolated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"><strong\/><\/span><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"><strong>How will the world pay for all this?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">It is estimated that global efforts to conserve nature are severely underfunded by around<a href=\"https:\/\/www.paulsoninstitute.org\/conservation\/financing-nature-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"> US$ 700 billion <\/a>per year. Countries have grappled over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/cop15-nature-summit-snag-money-matters-30-conservation-goal-2022-12-15\/\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">who should foot the bill<\/a> and how to tap into innovative funding strategies for nature, which generates huge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/blog\/protect-the-economy-by-protecting-nature-study-urges\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">value for the world\u2019s economies<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">\u201cThe linked crises of climate change and biodiversity loss are increasingly tormenting our lives, from catastrophic wildfires in the Amazon and water supply problems in Bogota, to historic flooding in North Carolina and Thailand,\u201d said Patricia Zurita, chief strategy officer at Conservation International. \u201cNegotiators cannot leave Cali without deciding where some of that funding will originate, when it will be delivered and what groups will receive it. Time is of the essence.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">\u201cConservation International is eager to roll up our sleeves and get to work,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">Among the most pressing issues at the summit will be the reform of government subsidies \u2014 financial support given to industries to lower their costs in sectors like agriculture, energy and mining. Unfortunately, many of these subsidies end up funding activities that harm ecosystems, such as deforestation and overfishing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">\u201cAll over the world, taxpayers unknowingly finance the destruction of nature, as governments pour trillions into businesses that degrade our ecosystems,\u201d Zurita said. \u201cIf countries cannot make meaningful progress to mobilize new resources and realign all harmful subsidies, then nature is in trouble.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">Conservation International will be advocating for a provision that would give clear guidance to governments, businesses organizations and others on identifying and repurposing subsidies for industries that drive nature loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">\u201cWe must ensure capital reaches the right projects \u2014 specifically, efforts that simultaneously benefit biodiversity, climate and human well-being,\u201d Zurita said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">This is happening in a very tangible way in Amazonia. Leaders from the nine Amazon countries will take the stage at COP16 to announce the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzbio.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Pan-Amazon Bioeconomy Network<\/a> \u2014 a commitment to creating an economy that works with nature. By using plants, animals and microorganisms to produce food, materials, energy and other products sustainably, this approach values standing forests, flowing rivers, biodiversity and the cultures of the Indigenous Peoples who live in the Amazon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">\u201cBy building a strong, nature-based economy, we&#8217;re protecting the Amazon rainforest for the 50 million people who live there, while taking a critical step toward aligning climate action, biodiversity conservation and human development,\u201d said Rachel Biderman, who leads Conservation International\u2019s work in the Americas. \u201cConservation International is proud to be a part of this effort, working to ensure that the network\u2019s commitments are translated into tangible actions.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: right\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cicloud.imgix.net\/images\/default-source\/vault-images-s3\/ci_60235720.jpg?sfvrsn=c24bcfc6_30&amp;&amp;auto=compress&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=crop?&amp;auto=compress&amp;auto=format&amp;w=800\" alt=\"\"\/>The Amazon \u00a9 Johnny Lye<\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><em style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">Will McCarry is the content director at Conservation International.
