Sono Ayako, one of<br \/>\nJapan\u2019s most famous novelists, wrote a novel about St. Maximilian<br \/>\nKolbe called <em>Miracles<\/em>, which has just been translated into<br \/>\nEnglish.<\/p>\n<p><em>Miracles<\/em> is a semiautobiographical account of the<br \/>\nauthor\u2019s personal investigation into the miracles approved by the<br \/>\nVatican for Kolbe\u2019s canonization. Her ambivalence towards her<br \/>\nCatholic faith is challenged as she traces Kolbe\u2019s steps from his<br \/>\nchildhood to his self-sacrifice in Auschwitz, with his time in<br \/>\nJapan standing in between as the ascetic crucible which made him a<br \/>\nsaint.<\/p>\n<p>Ayako writes: &#8220;Before he died, this priest flung a tough<br \/>\nquestion like a red-hot iron rod at the dried-up soul of modern<br \/>\nMan.
