It\u2019s a time to encourage students to critically examine the narratives that have shaped perceptions of Native peoples throughout history.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Native American Heritage Month <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nativeamericanheritagemonth.gov\/About.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">traces back to 1916<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> when New York first recognized American Indian Day. National recognition came in 1990 when President George H. W. Bush proclaimed November as National American Indian Heritage Month. Proclamations under various names, such as \u201cNational American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month,\u201d continue to honor Indigenous cultures and contributions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Celebrating Native American Heritage Month 2024 on College Campuses<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:160,&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Higher ed institutions across the country observe Native American Heritage Month in a variety of ways, creating platforms for students, faculty and staff to recognize and learn about the diverse and rich traditions of Indigenous communities. Here are just a few of the many ways colleges and universities are engaging with this month\u2019s observances:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Panels and Discussions:<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Expert panels provide an opportunity to encourage dialogue, as well as learn about ongoing challenges, cultural resilience and achievements Native American and Indigenous peoples. For instance, the University of Rhode Island (URI) is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/2024\/11\/native-american-heritage-month-at-uri-aims-to-raise-awareness-build-native-fluency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">hosting a panel<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> featuring tribal members, focusing on the powerful role of activism within Native American communities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lectures:<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Many institutions feature guest lecturers or faculty-led sessions that delve into Indigenous histories, traditions and contemporary issues. These lectures offer a chance to examine the complexities of Native American life. This year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stonybrook.edu\/commcms\/studentaffairs\/oma\/traditions\/native_american.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Stony Brook University in New York<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is welcoming <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nativetec.biz\/artist\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tecumseh Ceaser<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a member of the Matinecock Turkey Clan, Montaukett and Unkechaug Nations to discuss the history and culture of Indigenous communities native to Long Island and Queens.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Performances and Exhibits:<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some schools host cultural performances, such as traditional dance, music and storytelling. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohio.edu\/news\/2024\/11\/ohio-community-invited-native-american-heritage-month-events\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ohio University<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is inviting the community for a performance by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tonyduncanproductions.com\/copy-of-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tony Duncan<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, world-champion Hoop Dancer. In addition, the University of Arizona Museum of Art is hosting \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/artmuseum.arizona.edu\/see-do\/events\/calendar\/2024\/11\/02\/members-morning-indigenous-perspectives\">Indigenous Perspectives<\/a>,\u201d showcasing works by artists Duane Slick, Edgar Heap of Birds and Emmi Whitehorse.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ceremonies: <\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ceremonies are a meaningful way to celebrate and honor Native American Heritage Month, offering a space for reflection, unity and cultural expression. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/heritage.edu\/event\/flag-raising-ceremony-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heritage University<\/a> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">is hosting a Native American Heritage Month Flag Raising Ceremony featuring the Yakama Warriors and the raising of the flags of the United States, Washington state and the Yakama Nation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As we honor Native American Heritage Month 2024, it\u2019s important to recognize that the observances go beyond November.
