\ncomposed sacred music for four successive English monarchs,
\nstarting with Henry VIII and ending with Elizabeth.\u00a0Those were
\nturbulent times in England, especially for a church musician.<\/p>\n
\nmusician. Like his colleague (and probable pupil) William Byrd,
\nTallis was able to adapt his compositional style to meet the
\nconstantly shifting ideological demands of the regimes under which
\nhe served. Unlike the combative Byrd, who in his later years
\nremoved himself from court life and made a point of his loyalty to
\nRome, Tallis may have simply gone with the flow.\u00a0 We don\u2019t
\nknow for sure, because there is very little information about his
\nlife.<\/p>\n
\nMcCarthy, author of a concise new book on Tallis\u2019s life and music
\nin Oxford University Press\u2019s Master Musicians Series (which also
\nincludes her book on Byrd previously discussed on this podcast).
\nShe enthusiastically discusses his music, his times, the foundation
\nof polyphony in plainchant which was obliterated by the
\nReformation, the various compositional techniques of the time, and
\nthe nature of the medieval modes with which these composers
\nworked.<\/p>\n
