\nof this document (with supplementary material from
\nLibertas<\/em> and Longuinqua<\/em>). Here, and in the
\nmagisterium of other 19th-century Popes, we find a number of
\nteachings on Church and State that have gone largely unmentioned
\nsince the Council, and which are sadly forgotten or even rejected
\nby the majority of self-described conservative Catholics.<\/p>\n

\nGod, obedience which cannot be arbitrarily limited to what can be
\nknown by reason, excluding revelation. So, Leo says, the State has
\nduties to profess, protect and foster religion, and not just any
\nreligion, but the true Faith:<\/p>\n

\ncannot lead us to dismiss prior teachings on Church and State. Yet
\nthis works both ways: Church teaching is is a unity, so when
\ndiscussing these older teachings, we must also ask what is the
\nnature Vatican II\u2019s teaching on religious liberty and how all of
\nthese teachings can be understood in light of one another. The key
\nlies in the limited scope of Dignitatis Humanae<\/em>, which
\nfrom the outset intends only to address religious coercion by the
\nState, and leaves the duties of the State towards religion
\nuntouched in both senses of the word.<\/p>\n
\nfurther from the ideals of the American Founding than many careless
\nreaders of Dignitatis Humanae<\/em> have assumed, American
\nCatholics can and must love their country. Therefore we close with
\nPope Leo\u2019s friendly and encouraging words to the Church in
\nAmerica.<\/p>\n
