The comedian and the Republican president have hurled insults at each other for years, but it appears they\u2019ve made peace. Now, some are confused about Maher\u2019s political beliefs. So, is he a Democrat or a Republican?<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-3\">Find out everything we know about Maher\u2019s political position below.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Did Bill Maher Meet With Donald Trump?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-4\">Maher\u2019s dinner with Trump was apparently set up by their mutual friend<a href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/celeb\/kid-rock\/\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\"> <strong>Kid Rock<\/strong><\/a>, who has actively supported Trump. Around two weeks after the meeting, Maher opened up about it to his <em>Real Time<\/em> audience during an April 2025 episode.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-5\">\u201cAs you know, 12 days ago, I had dinner with President Trump \u2014 a dinner that was set up by my friend Kid Rock, because we share a belief that there\u2019s got to be something better than hurling insults from 3,000 miles away,\u201d the comedian began. \u201cAnd let me first say that to all the people who treated this like it was some kind of summit meeting, you are ridiculous. In the most recent past presidential elections, Maher voted for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/celeb\/president-barack-obama\/\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\">Barack Obama<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/celeb\/hillary-clinton\/\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\"> Hillary Clinton<\/a><\/strong> and<a href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/celeb\/joe-biden\/\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\"><strong> Joe Biden<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Is Bill Maher Conservative?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-9\">Maher has described himself as a libertarian. He has not labeled himself as either a conservative or a liberal-leaning voter.<\/p>\n<h2>Are Bill Maher and Donald Trump Friends?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-10\">Trump and Maher are not necessarily friends, but Maher pointed out that it\u2019s \u201cpossible\u201d Trump could \u201caccept\u201d him as such.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-11\">\u201cSo MAGA fans, don\u2019t worry, your boy gave me nothing. Just hats,\u201d Maher said on his show, before adding, \u201cHats and a very generous amount of time and a willingness to listen and accept me as a possible friend, even though I\u2019m not MAGA, which was the point of the dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-12\">Maher further described Trump as a completely different person in the flesh versus the persona he has in the public eye. In fact, Maher called Trump \u201cgracious\u201d and \u201cmeasured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-13\">\u201cThe guy I met is not the person who the night before the dinner tweeted a bunch of nasty crap about how he thought this dinner was a bad idea and what a deranged (expletive) I was,\u201d Maher explained. \u201cI read it and thought, \u2018Oh, what a lovely way to welcome someone to your house.\u2019 But when I got there, that guy wasn\u2019t living there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-14\">Apparently, Trump even laughed with Maher a few times, the HBO star revealed, noting that it wasn\u2019t a fake chuckle.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-15\">\u201cJust for starters, he laughs! I\u2019ve never seen him laugh in public,\u201d Maher said. \u201cBut he does, including at himself. And it\u2019s not fake. Believe me, as a comedian of 40 years, I know a fake laugh when I hear it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-16\">The Comedy Central alum elaborated by saying he \u201cnever felt [he] had to walk on eggshells around\u201d Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-17\">\u201cAnd honestly? I voted for Clinton and Obama, but I would never feel comfortable talking to them the way I was able to talk with Donald Trump,\u201d Maher said. \u201cThat\u2019s just how it went down. Make of it what you will. Me? I feel it\u2019s emblematic of why the Democrats are so unpopular these days. He was even OK when I checked him on the orangutan lawsuit. He was. I know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-18\">Nevertheless, Maher clarified that he will still \u201cbe critical about a lot of what [Trump\u2019s] doing: the trade war and disappearing people, ruling by decree, threatening judges, gutting the government with glee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-19\">\u201cSo no, I didn\u2019t go MAGA.
