\nthe Sentences<\/em> by Peter Lombard, bishop of Paris from
\n1095-1160. This collection systematically arranged the theological
\njudgments of Scripture and the Church Fathers on various topics.
\nFor almost four centuries, those seeking higher credentials in
\ntheology had to study, teach, and comment on Lombard\u2019s
\nSentences<\/em>. It was formative for the likes of St. Thomas
\nAquinas and St. Bonaventure. Over time, the genre of commentaries
\non the Sentences<\/em> became its own vehicle for new
\ndevelopments in theology. The Sentences<\/em> was not replaced
\nby Aquinas\u2019s Summa as a standard textbook until the 16th
\ncentury.<\/p>\n
\nSentences<\/em> and its significance for the development of
\ntheology. The first,
\nPeter Lombard<\/em><\/a> (2004), is about Lombard and his book.
\nThe second,
\nThe Story of a Great Medieval Book: Peter Lombard\u2019s
\n\u201cSentences\u201d<\/em><\/a> (2007), is about the commentary tradition on
\nthe Sentences. Rosemann gives fascinating insights into the
\ndevelopment as theology as a systematic science, which had profound
\nramifications for Catholic spiritual life and the history of the
\nWest.<\/p>\n
