In literature, he was perhaps the greatest
\nEnglish prose writer of his time, and a highly skilled poet. In
\nmusic, he was an accomplished amateur violinist, taught music to
\nthe boys at his school in Littlemore, and oversaw liturgical music
\nas the head of an Oratorian community. In architecture, he
\ncommissioned a number of church buildings and was involved in
\ncontroversies over the role of the Gothic in contemporary English
\nCatholic church architecture.<\/p>\n
Though Newman never wrote a book on the topic of beauty,
\ncomments on beauty and the arts are sprinkled throughout his
\nwritings, sometimes in surprising contexts. In Unearthly
\nBeauty: The Aesthetic of St. John Henry Newman<\/em>, Fr.
