Michelle<\/strong><\/a> and Barack Obama<\/strong><\/a> have been candid about their relationship while constantly shutting down divorce rumors.<\/p>\n The former president and first lady tied the knot<\/a> in 1992. The couple share daughters<\/a> Malia and Sasha, whom they welcomed in 1998 and 2001, respectively. Michelle previously opened up about why she chooses to be forthcoming about her and Barack\u2019s highs and lows.<\/p>\n \u201cI talk about marriage because I just think that No. 1, most people don\u2019t talk about it,\u201d Michelle said during a January 2024 episode of \u201cOn Purpose With Jay Shetty\u201d<\/a> podcast. \u201cBecause what happens is that by not knowing, you hit, in your relationship, some natural, like, understandable rough patches, and you want to quit. And it\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, no, no, no, no, no. That\u2019s not quit worthy. That\u2019s just the nature of things.\u2019 That\u2019s why I joked, it\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, you\u2019re mad at your partner, you\u2019re mad for a year and you think the marriage is over.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n In 2025, rumors swirled that Barack and Michelle were headed for a split \u2014 but the Becoming<\/em> author directly addressed the speculation<\/a> on multiple occasions.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s the thing that we as women struggle with \u2014 disappointing people,\u201d she shared during an April 2025 episode of Sophia Bush<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cWork in Progress\u201d podcast. \u201cI mean, so much so that this year people \u2026 couldn\u2019t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself, that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.\u201d<\/p>\n Keep scrolling to see what Barack and Michelle have said about the divorce rumors and their relationship now:<\/p>\n Michelle opened up about how she and Barack have marital issues<\/a> just like everyone else.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t want people looking at me and Barack like hashtag couple goals and not know that no, no, there are some broken things that happen even in the best of marriages,\u201d Michelle said during a January 2024 episode of the \u201cOn Purpose With Jay Shetty\u201d podcast. \u201cAfter 31 years, yeah, we still do [cross the line], but you know it quicker. That takes a second, right?\u201d<\/p>\n Michelle confessed that she and Barack have \u201cmade a lot of mistakes\u201d and have \u201cgotten it wrong,\u201d but that\u2019s why they\u2019ve stayed together after all this time.<\/p>\n While speaking to a group of students at Hamilton College in April 2025, Barack admitted that he was working on prioritizing<\/a> his and Michelle\u2019s marriage following his presidency. (Barack served two terms from 2009 to 2017.)<\/p>\n \u201cLook, I was in a deep deficit with my wife,\u201d Barack quipped. \u201cSo I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things.\u201d<\/p>\n Speculation sparked that Barack and Michelle were having difficulties after she did not attend the inauguration for Donald Trump<\/strong>\u2019s second term in early 2025. Months later, Michelle decided to speak out on the rumors<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cMy decision to skip the inauguration, you know, what people don\u2019t realize, or my decision to make choices at the beginning of this year that suited me, were met with such ridicule and criticism.
