Modernity elevated pure, abstract reasoning as the only way to
\nknow about reality. Reason having disenchanted everything else,
\nmodernity then became disenchanted with reason. The ascendancy of
\nreason over superstitious myths was viewed by the postmodernists as
\njust another myth to be exposed.<\/p>\n
The postmodernists were right to see that the dictates of reason
\nwere not wholly separate from our lives, self-images and desires,
\nbut were colored by the stories we tell about ourselves. But they
\nwere wrong to conclude that reason is therefore inherently
\nsuspect.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s because human life really is imbued with an intelligible,
\nnarrative form, and we are capable of telling true stories about
\nourselves that reflect the actual story-form of our lives and
\nhistory as a whole. Reason can function as a gloss on the story of
\ncreation. The mistake was thinking that it could ever be sealed off
\nin a laboratory to begin with.<\/p>\n
