Matthew McConaughey<\/strong><\/a> reflected on his days as \u201cthe rom-com guy\u201d and how turning down one movie offer changed his career.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was getting quantity, but I wasn\u2019t getting the quality,\u201d McConaughey, 55, recalled during a Thursday, September 18, episode of \u201cThe Diary of a CEO\u201d podcast<\/a>, noting that he wanted to do something \u201cthat scares me\u201d rather than what he was used to.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I want to do is dramas, but Hollywood won\u2019t offer me one no matter how big of a pay cut I take,\u201d McConaughey continued. \u201cIf I can\u2019t do what I want to do, I\u2019m going to quit doing what I\u2019ve been doing. [I] Chose to, boom, go to the ranch in Texas. \u2026 Told my agent, \u2018No more rom-coms.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

After making this decision with wife Camila Alves<\/strong>\u2019 support, the well was dry. (McConaughey noted that Alves was pregnant with their first child at this point in their relationship.)<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMost people have thought about giving up their jobs at one time or another \u2014 including some of Hollywood\u2019s biggest stars. During a 2019 interview with Australian Men\u2019s Health, Chris Hemsworth admitted that he considered leaving acting behind after his role in 2009\u2019s Star Trek sparked fewer opportunities than he\u2019d hoped. \u201cI was about to [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cNothing comes in for months,\u201d McConaughey said, noting that he started looking into alternate careers. \u201cThis offer comes in for this action comedy. $8 million offer. I read it and I said, \u2018No, thank you. That\u2019s the stuff I\u2019m not doing.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cThey come back with a $10 million offer. I\u2019m not reading that again, no thank you. Come back at a $12 million offer. Guys, tell him I said no thanks. They come back at a $14.5 million offer. I said, \u2018Let me read that again.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

McConaughey ultimately turned it down.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have any proof of it, but I think that me saying no to that $14.5 million offer a year into me leaving and saying no more rom-coms,\u201d he said. \u201cI think me doing that sent the message through Hollywood. Oh, McConaughey is not bluffing. What the f***\u2019s he up to?\u201d<\/p>\n
