This historic agreement will pave the way to protect international waters \u2014 Earth\u2019s least-governed ecosystems \u2014 which face numerous threats from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/blog\/news-spotlight-how-many-fish-in-the-sea-less-than-we-thought\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">overfishing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/blog\/disaster-deferred-deep-sea-mining-talks-postponed\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">deep sea mining<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/science\/climate-issues\/ocean-impacts\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">climate change<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/news\/27052025\/todays-climate-plastic-pollution-seabird-health-ocean\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">pollution<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">\u201cThis is a major win for our oceans and all of us who depend on them,\u201d said Monica Medina, Arnhold Fellow at Conservation International. \u201cThe high seas belong both to no one and all of us. We have the rare chance to stop the loss of nature before we lose it forever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">The high seas \u2014 waters beyond any nation\u2019s jurisdiction \u2014 cover nearly two-thirds of Earth\u2019s ocean, yet only <a href=\"https:\/\/mpatlas.org\/countries\/HS\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">1 percent<\/a> is protected. This vast and largely unexplored expanse holds more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/articles\/2018\/06\/07\/5-surprising-stats-show-why-high-seas-need-protection\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">90 percent<\/a> of ocean habitat and some of the planet\u2019s richest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/blog\/in-high-seas-scientists-see-a-lifeline-for-coral-reefs\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">biodiversity<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">The treaty enshrines the belief that there are areas of the ocean that we must protect as a human race to survive, Medina said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">\u201cPeople need a healthy ocean, our way of life depends on it,\u201d she said. \u201cThe high seas regulate currents and help keep ocean temperatures in balance \u2014 and may even hold the cures to human diseases,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is entirely possible to balance their protection with their ability to provide for our way of life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">Now that the agreement has been ratified by 60 countries, it will become binding in 120 days. It will enable the creation of marine protected areas in waters beyond national jurisdictions, guarantee environmental impact assessments of activities like fishing and deep sea mining and ensure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/blog\/high-seas-treaty-a-long-time-coming\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">scientific discoveries<\/a> from the high seas are equitably shared among countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">The high seas treaty has been years in the making, going all the way back to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/law-of-sea-convention\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">1982 UN Law of the Sea Convention<\/a>. And it comes at a critical juncture: Without the high seas, it would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/blog\/to-protect-high-seas-take-heed-of-climate-change\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">virtually impossible<\/a> for nations to meet their goal of protecting 30 percent of the planet\u2019s seas by the year 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">Conservation International, a founding member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluenaturealliance.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">Blue Nature Alliance<\/a> and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coralreefshighseas.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">Coral Reefs of the High Seas Coalition<\/a>, has supported the treaty\u2019s ratification and implementation, as well as helped shape how it can be put into practice, including identifying priority areas for protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">One of these areas is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/blog\/deep-sea-expedition-reveals-over-100-new-species-in-the-pacific\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">Salas y G\u00f3mez and Nazca ridges<\/a>, a series of deep-sea mountain ranges off the coasts of Peru and Chile \u2014 a key migration corridor for sharks, whales and turtles, and home to reef-building corals, which support thriving underwater gardens. These waters also hold deep cultural significance: Polynesian voyagers crisscrossed them for thousands of years as they explored from the West Pacific to Rapa Nui \u2014 the Indigenous name for Easter Island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">According to Medina, this historic moment is also when the hard, but necessary work begins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"\/><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\">\u201cFor the first time, the high seas are on the map for protection,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat comes next is up to us all \u2014 and the ocean\u2019s future is brighter for it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"><strong\/><\/span><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; text-align: inherit; text-transform: inherit; word-spacing: normal; white-space: inherit\"><strong>Further reading:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Mary Kate McCoy is a staff writer at Conservation International.
