President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0on Sunday warned Russia that he may send Ukraine long-range\u00a0Tomahawk missiles<\/a>\u00a0if Moscow doesn\u2019t settle its war there soon \u2014 suggesting that he could be ready to increase the pressure on Vladimir Putin\u2019s government using a key weapons system.<\/p>\n \u201cI might say, \u2019Look: if this war is not going to get settled, I\u2019m going to send them Tomahawks,\u201d Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One as he flew to Israel. \u201cThe Tomahawk is an incredible weapon, very offensive weapon. And honestly, Russia does not need that.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump said, \u201cI might tell them that if the war is not settled \u2014 that we may very well.\u201d He added, \u201cWe may not, but we may do it. I think it\u2019s appropriate to bring up.\u201d<\/p>\n His comments came after Trump spoke by phone earlier Sunday with Ukrainian President\u00a0Volodymyr Zelenskyy,<\/a>\u00a0and Trump said he mentioned possibly sending Tomahawks during that conversation.<\/p>\n \u201cDo they want to have Tomahawks going in that direction? I don\u2019t think so,\u201d Trump said of Russia. \u201cI think I might speak to Russia about that.\u201d He added that \u201cTomahawks are a new step of aggression.\u201d<\/p>\n His suggestions followed\u00a0Russia having attacked<\/a>\u00a0Ukraine\u2019s power grid overnight, part of an\u00a0ongoing campaign<\/a>\u00a0to cripple Ukrainian energy infrastructure before winter. Moscow also expressed \u201cextreme concern\u201d over the U.S. potentially providing Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine.<\/p>\n Putin himself has previously suggested that the United States supplying long-range missiles to Ukraine will seriously damage relations between Moscow and Washington.<\/p>\n For his part, Zelenskyy described his latest call with Trump as \u201cvery productive,\u201d and said the pair had discussed strengthening Ukraine\u2019s \u201cair defense, resilience, and long-range capabilities,\u201d along with \u201cdetails related to the energy sector.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump in recent weeks has taken a notably tougher tact with Putin, after the Russian leader has declined to engage in direct talks with Zelenskyy about easing fighting.<\/p>\n Last month, Trump announced that he now believes\u00a0Ukraine could win back<\/a>\u00a0all the territory lost to Russia \u2014 a dramatic shift from the Republican\u2019s repeated\u00a0calls for Kyiv to make concessions<\/a>\u00a0to end\u00a0Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n But the U.S. president, at least so far, has resisted Zelenskyy\u2019s calls for Tomahawks.
