Top mathematicians are increasingly pushing back against the tech industry\u2019s artificial-intelligence-powered incursion into their field.<\/p>\n

A statement<\/a> released last Friday and signed by 25 winners of the Fields Medal, math\u2019s highest prize, decries a \u201csevere misalignment\u201d between AI companies\u2019 goals and those of the discipline. The declaration closed out what was perhaps the most consequential week in math\u2019s history: last Tuesday OpenAI claimed a solution<\/a> to the Navier-Stokes equations, one of the seven \u201cMillennium Prize Problems,\u201d considered the subject\u2019s hardest open questions.<\/p>\n

The declaration speaks to the breakneck pace of the ongoing race AI companies are engaged in as they attempt to solve the highest-profile open problems to demonstrate their models\u2019 capabilities. The goal of mathematics is not only to solve problems, the declaration argues, but to advance the \u201cconceptual understanding and insight\u201d of the humans who practice it. This human culture is being endangered by the \u201cmass production\u201d of AI-generated proofs, it adds.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThe mathematical community functions, in many ways, as a miniature version of humanity,\u201d the statement says. \u201cIt consists of individuals using a wide variety of different approaches, joined by core values.\u201d<\/p>\n

Notable among the signatories is mathematician Terence Tao. For years, Tao has been publicly optimistic about AI\u2019s entry on the math scene\u2014he appeared in a promotional video from OpenAI<\/a> just a few months ago\u2014but recently his views have evolved in the direction of greater concern. On his blog<\/a> last Wednesday, Tao reflected on \u201cthat infamous advertisement\u201d with conflicted emotions. He lamented the current situation, which he said \u201chas deteriorated markedly\u201d and described as a landscape in which companies are \u201cincreasingly focused on the race to develop extremely powerful, autonomous AI technologies regardless of their actual value to society.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tao is not the only mathematical eminence with a rather sudden change of heart. Last week a number of concerned mathematicians, many of them at the top of their subject, launched the Association for Human Mathematics<\/a> (AHM)\u2014an effort that was underway even before the earth-shattering Navier-Stokes news.<\/p>\n

\u201cSentiment has been building for a while now that the current relationship between math and AI companies is both harmful and short-sighted,\u201d says Naomi Sweeting, an assistant professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and one of the first listed members of the AHM. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to build a future that\u2019s good for humans and good for mathematics.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new declaration and the AHM share the perspective that what\u2019s happening in math should be seen as a test case, not some siloed conflict that the rest of us can ignore. \u201cWe see these as part of broader alignment issues impacting other scientific and creative professions,\u201d the Fields medalists\u2019 declaration reads, \u201cas well as the whole of society.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
