Others wonder whether Jesus forbade attending his father’s funeral. The meaning becomes clearer when we read His words in context. Matthew and Luke reveal the priority and cost of following Christ.

One contrast demands our attention. Jesus said, “Follow me.” The disciple answered, “Lord, suffer me first…”. That word “first” helps explain the let the dead bury the dead meaning. Christ confronted a divided priority.

Nothing can continually take first place before the Living Christ.

“And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.”

The disciple called Jesus “Lord,” yet he asked to put something else first. His words reveal the conflict: “Lord, suffer me first…”

Jesus answered with a direct command: “Follow me.”

Christ did not tell him to follow whenever life became convenient. He called the disciple to respond without delay.

Family responsibilities matter. Scripture commands believers to honor their parents. Yet nothing can take first place before the Living Christ.

Jesus confronted the disciple’s priorities. Would he follow the Lord, or would he continue delaying obedience?

That same question confronts Christians today. We must examine anything that continually comes before our obedience to God.

Luke 9:60 Helps Explain the Meaning

Luke 9:60 KJV “Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.”

This passage gives us an important detail. Jesus did not merely tell the disciple what to leave behind.

Christ gave him a mission: “go thou and preach the kingdom of God.”

The disciple faced a choice between delay and obedience. Jesus called him forward into the work of God’s kingdom.

This command reveals the urgency of discipleship. Following the Living Christ requires more than good intentions.

Jesus calls His followers to put His kingdom first. That same urgency appears in the Great Commission.

Who Are “the Dead” in “Let the Dead Bury Their Dead”?

Jesus used the word “dead” in a striking way. The statement points to both physical death and spiritual death.

Scripture elsewhere describes people without spiritual life in Christ as dead in sin.

Ephesians 2:1 KJV “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;”

Paul describes people apart from Christ as spiritually dead because of sin. They need the life that only God can give.

Many Christians therefore understand Jesus’ words this way. Let the spiritually dead attend to the physically dead.

This interpretation fits the New Testament’s language about spiritual death. However, we should not claim more than Scripture reveals.

Jesus’ central command remains unmistakable: “Follow me.”

The Living Christ called this disciple away from delay and into obedient discipleship.

Was the Disciple’s Father Already Dead?

The Bible does not tell us.

Some interpreters believe the disciple’s father had already died. Others believe the phrase referred to waiting until his father eventually died.

Historical customs may help explain the situation. However, Scripture does not give enough detail to settle that question. We should not build a certain conclusion where the Bible remains silent.

What Scripture does make clear is Jesus’ command: “Follow me.” Christ focused on the disciple’s response. The man wanted something else to come first.

The lesson remains firmly anchored there.
