Alice In Chains has largely kept themselves on people’s radar the past few years with some touring and anniversary reissues of both Dirt and Jar Of Flies. While we haven’t gotten a new Alice In Chains record since Rainier Fog in 2018, it seems that at least the band is starting to think about one.
According to Alice In Chains vocalist and guitarist Jerry Cantrell in an interview with Loudwire, the band is working on both “creative” endeavors and non-album things. Though Cantrell notes he just started the promotional cycle for his upcoming solo album I Want Blood, and nothing’s gonna happen until that’s over.
“There’s a couple of things that we’re working on, like non-album related,” said Cantrell. “We’re going to jump on a call [soon], we’ve got a few creative irons in the fire, but I’m at the very beginning of this cycle that I’ve committed to so I pretty much kind of keep my focus on this.”
Alice In Chains vocalist William DuVall addressed the topic of a potential new album in a 2023 interview with 105.5 WDHA, saying pretty much the same – everyone in the band has stuff going on.
“I would suppose [new music will happen], right?” said DuVall. “There’s no plans in the offing right now, because we’re all kind of doing other things. But inevitably it seems to kind of circle back.”
He continued: “Right now we’re just coming out of the lockdowns, and we’ve all been busy doing our own thing. Jerry is out on tour at the moment for his solo album, and I’m doing my thing. We have plans for some live shows in September/October, and I’m sure that will blow off the cobwebs and we’ll start looking at some new ideas for the next Alice In Chains album.
“We had a lot of time imposed on us and I think we’re going through this period of catching up on things that we had planned for 2020 [and] 2021, and we’re all finally getting to do that now. So, it’s kind of like a stopgap and we’re just dealing with all of these stockpiled projects that we had planned a few years back. So once we get back up to speed with things and we get these dates underway in late summer, I’m sure it will spark a whole bunch of ideas for the next Alice In Chains studio album.”
