It is now harder for people convicted of violent crimes to change their names.

Governor Chris Sununu signed a bill Friday what would require a petitioner to provide a compelling reason for the change, and would notify prosecutors and victims about the request.

This comes after a court granted a name change request for a convicted murderer.

When the victim’s daughter tried to check his status, she couldn’t find him. Advocates of the bill have said that it would prevent similar situations in the future.

“It is our shared responsibility to provide for the protection of the most vulnerable among us, especially children and victims of violent crime,” Governor Sununu said. “In signing this bill, the State of New Hampshire is safeguarding victim rights by increasing notification requirements to victims and their families.”
