Keen to satiate our curiosity for the small villages of Provence, my husband, two young children and I depart from Barcelona excited for our first family road trip through the South of France. Our journey takes us to Domaine de Manville, Domaine du Mas de Pierre near the village of Saint-Paul de Vence and, finally, Terre Blanche, passing through plenty of pastoral settings along the way.

A WEEK IN PASTORAL PROVENCE BEGINS

Three hours into our drive, we pass through Nimes and the scenery quickly changes to green fields and tiny villages that look to have no more than 50 residents each. Passing by farms and olive groves really set the scene for our adventure in Provence.

Our first stop: Domaine de Manville, a vast estate surrounded by nature and a beautiful golf course. The place has a rich connection to the Saut family from Baux de Provence, and it’s fascinating to see its evolution from a farm to a beautiful resort with an enduring connection to the land.

On arrival, the tranquillity of the place is instantly felt. We’re given a golf cart with our names on it for getting around, which thrills the kids. Our villa is spectacular—there’s three bedrooms, a large living room, and an outdoor area with a barbeque. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything we could possibly need.

Our first dinner is at Le Bistro, which focuses on local and seasonal produce. The food is incredible. The olive oil is unlike any I’d ever tasted before and the freshly baked bread, parfait.

The next day, we first take the kids to the indoor pool, then explore the beautiful village of Les Baux de Provence. The hotel suggested we visit the Carriere de Lumieres, an exhibit showcasing famous artists inside a cave-like space, so we do and it’s unlike anything we’d never seen before. Upon returning to the hotel, the kids enjoy a movie in the private cinema room—yes, they had their very own cinema.

Our dinner at L’Aupiho is another highlight. It’s a Michelin-starred restaurant at the hotel, and the dishes, made with fresh ingredients from the garden, delight our tastebuds. The unforgettable meal makes our stay even more special. We even got a chance to visit the kitchen and meet Chef Lieven van Aken in person.

Domaine de Manville set a high standard—it’s an encompassing experience that reveals the beauty and richness of Provence. It’s a reminder that traveling is about more than just seeing new places, it’s about connecting with the stories and the people of the places we visit.

HAPPILY LOST IN WONDERLAND

The road trip continues with a detour through the stunning lavender fields of the Valensole Plateau, renowned for its breathtaking views of purple blooms that stretch as far as the eye can see. This region, vibrant in the summer months, offers a stunning natural display that perfectly captures the essence of the French countryside.

Driving toward Nice, we stop just 20 minutes from the airport at Domaine du Mas de Pierre. The detailed care taken in this resort’s gardens is immediately apparent. After checking in, we spend a relaxing evening by the fireplace playing chess with the kids, a perfect way to unwind.

Our room at Domaine du Mas de Pierre is ideal for families, with its beautiful outside area and separate spaces for us and the kids. The resort features an outdoor pool, an Alice in Wonderland-themed kids club and beautifully maintained gardens with an orchid farm.

Steps from the spa, a beautiful breakfast is served, with remarkable attention to detail—you can even make your own nut spread. The indoor pool is another highlight, with its perfectly tempered water and accompanying garden area where you can relax outdoors or enjoy a jacuzzi. The spa also offers a sauna and steam room, providing everything needed for a rejuvenating experience.

The location of Le Mas de Pierre makes it easy to explore nearby attractions. We opt for a short trip to Antibes, just 15 minutes away, and also to St-Paul de Vence, only a few minutes from the resort. Both towns are jewels of the Riviera, offering rich history, stunning art and charming streets.

A GRAND FINALE INDEED

Before heading back to Barcelona, we make a last stop at Terre Blanche Hotel Spa Golf Resort, known for its vast size and luxurious offerings. Despite its large scale—the entire domaine is bigger than the country of Monaco—the resort has a cozy feel with only 115 suites and villas, ensuring each guest receives personalized attention.

On arrival, we’re warmly greeted by the staff who quickly escort us to our villa via golf cart. Already in the room are thoughtfully prepared welcome amenities and gifts for the kids, which make us instantly feel at home. While tempted to lounge around the heated outdoor pool, we opt for the serene spa’s indoor pool. After a few relaxing hours at the spa, we head back to the hotel for dinner at La Gaudina.

The next day, we explore some of the nearby villages—Fayence and Tourrettes. The resort is also just a 45-minute drive from Cannes and Antibes, offering easy access to the seaside and high-end shopping.

The historical depths of Provence at Domaine de Manville, the tranquil gardens of Domaine du Mas de Pierre, the expansive luxury of Terre Blanche—each property on our journey uniquely captures the essence of its region. All three also provide unparalleled service, exquisite dining and thoughtful amenities. This trip is a vivid reminder of the rich variety and high quality of hospitality France offers. Returning to Barcelona, we bring back not just souvenirs, but also cherished memories that continue to inspire our future travels.
