Elton John used his old kneecap as an accessory after recently discussing his health woes.

The musician, 77, turned heads with his necklace — which featured part of his own knee — while attending the premiere of his new biopic, Never Too Late, at the BFI London Film Festival on Thursday, October 10. John, who had both of his knees replaced in the past, was joined by husband David Furnish at the event.

Furnish, 61, directed the project about John, with whom he shares sons Zachary, 13, and Elijah, 11.

“There are moments making the film where it started to get too much for me. I started to be carrying a lot of anxiety and a lot of emotion,” Furnish told Hello! on Thursday at the premiere. “It’s a responsibility — but for me — it’s also a joy because I know a side of Elton that the rest of the world doesn’t know. And it was really important to us that we captured his authentic voice and his heart really, really, honestly, and I feel we’ve done that.”

Furnish went on to reflect on his husband’s health, adding, “Elton talks quite openly about his mortality. That’s not an easy thing to hear. And you’re really taking his vulnerability and you’re putting it up on the screen for people to see.”

While attending the New York Film Festival premiere of the documentary earlier this month, John discussed his recent health scares.

“To be honest with you, there’s not much of me left,” he said. “I don’t have tonsils, adenoids or an appendix. I don’t have a prostate. I don’t have a right hip or a left knee or a right knee. In fact, the only thing left to me is my left hip.”

Despite having multiple operations, John said he’s “still here,” noting, “And I can’t thank you [enough], you’re the people that made me.”

Earlier this year, John skipped the 2024 Emmy Awards — where he earned EGOT status — after undergoing surgery. He offered an update in September about how he was “dealing with a severe eye infection” that left him “with only limited vision in one eye.”

Elton John has battled several health issues throughout his legendary music career, from addiction struggles to a secret cancer battle. “I am a survivor. I’ve survived a lot of things,” he told Variety in a March 2019 interview. “Life is full of pitfalls, even when you’re sober. I can deal with them now because I […]

“I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye,” he wrote via Instagram while thanking his medical team. “I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home, and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery thus far.”

John previously also suffered a fall, which caused him to postpone the Europe and U.K. dates of his Farewell tour. John later revealed he was retiring from touring to focus on his family.

“We’ve got our sons, you know, they’re getting into their teenage years now,” Furnish told Entertainment Tonight in June. “We don’t want to miss anything. We want to be present for that. It’s sort of a key decade, I think, in a child’s life. He’s been doing it for 60 years, so it’s nice to have that time to spend at home with family.”
